ugh. Wheel bearings...

So I took my car into the dealership for a state inspection. Failed due to both rear wheel bearings being worn and needing to be replaced. I would have never known. Anyways, it's costing me $650 (parts + labor+ tax). Does this quote sound okay? I checked with an other place and they gave me a quote around $700. Am I getting screwed over?

I would think that's about average cost for that sorta work -labor ain't cheap

Yeah it's not that hard to do yourself if you have some basic mechanical skills. If not, it may be best to have a pro do it. All you really need are the wheel bearings and someone to press the old ones out and the new ones in for you. I think I paid $15 per side to get them pressed in last time I needed them done. I agree. Take the parts to a machine shop yourself and have them pressed. Shouldn't cost more than $40.

I bought a bearing off RockAuto for about $30 shipped and took the spindle to a local shop to have the pressing done, cost me $20 and was done in a few hours. Taking the spindle off is a 30 minute job (wheel off, caliper/brake parts off, spindle nut off, three spindle bolts off) and the pressing is 10-15 minutes tops - you're looking at $60-$70 in parts and 2-2.5 hours labor. No way is $650 worth that amount of work IMO.

Same here when i done my rear hub swap! 20 bucks a side to be pressed in at a local shop (I kno the guy also lol) and all the rest of the work I done so I didn't spend much... $650 - $700 is ridiculous! In that case, ill buy a press and charge people 2 do those types of jobs for a living lol

Me and jk69cat(justin) did mine on his old press, we pretty much winged it and got them perfect. Took us forever to figure it out though, so maybe thats included in the $650

Yeah, that's the problem. I don't know anyone with a press and I have absolutely no experience doing this kind of work. At least this way, it's covered under a warranty. I have neither the time nor the tools to perform the job. I'm a full time student and this is my main mode of transportation next to my Mustang, which has seen better days.

All you need to do is call around and find someone who says they can press bearings out of and into a spindle. A driveline/driveshaft shop is where I ended up taking mine.

yep thats about what i paid... well i got into a fight with the guy cause he said he fixed the squealing noise coming from the back wheels then i picked it up and as soon as i pulled out it started doing it again. i had to make him come out of the shop and watch me drive around while it would make the noise. then he got pissed haha but he gave me like a 50% discount so i was happy.

Oh well. I asked my dad what he would do if he were in my situation, considering he is a retired mechanic. Told me to have Ford do it since it's at the shop anyways. At least this way, if they screw up, it's on them. The half shafts have to come out, right? Is that a PITA?

Half shafts don't come out, but the spindle and hub do come off the outer end of the half shaft. Everything slides apart easily, with exception of the hub from the bearing and the bearing from the spindle.
