how many 89 bird have stamped steel rear controol arms

I was at the pick a part salvage in okc and there was a 89 supercoupe that had stamped steel lower rear control arms. I thought all birds were cast iron but this car had stamped steel ones the only one I ever saw. I don't know if it was a one year wonder or maybe ford used a different supplier for a short time. The car was manufactured in the 4 month of 1990. It also had a hollow rear anti sway bar.

They've discussed a bit, seems like all 89's had them, not sure about 90's.

Yes All 89s that I have seen have them and 90s never have them as far as I have seen and I asked the question if it was better in anyway and the answer was... "not any better than the iron ones".

Those aren't cast iron, they're cast steel.

One shatters, the other bends.

These bend... If you bend it hard enough. (lol)

I'ld say the cast are used for their rigidity under braking and acceleration as the LCA is what centers the rear spindle in the wheel well for and aft. The stamped ones have some flex in them, more apt to twist under hard braking or acceleration as the spindle with tire is trying to stop or accelerate and the car's mass wants to stay put.

Haven't weighed them but I doubt the cast are all that much heavier.

A fine pair ... ... and whatever you do, Have a Safe Trip!
