broken springs...

my father has an 89, we were replacing tie rod ends on his car, and i saw the spring was rusted pretty good, and as i felt around, i felt the spring was broken on the bottom couple of coils, it was that way on both sides, and i never got the chance to check the rears

my friend had a 91, and the springs are rusting in the same spot as my fathers

just wondering is this is common, and to possibly give a heads up

Broken springs are common on most older cars, especially if it's riding around on its OEM shocks on all four corners by now. Heaven only knows how my 114,000 mile old Sport springs have held out... only a little longer til my shocks arrive...

Yup. Very common in my experiences. My old 1990 V6 had broken springs in the back and my current 95 had a broken spring on the drivers side rear. I just had that one replaced two days ago. My car only has 69K on it. My father has broken springs in the front on his 94 and it only has 75K on it.

it's just a wear thing. New shocks do help reduce the load on the springs, and when they wear out, the springs start taking more load than they were designed for. my 95 broke a right front at about 87k. Had the shocks been replaced a bit earlier I might have avoided that.
