Strut mount

Im trying to replace my strut and i was wondering how do i get the strut mount off to put it on the new on?

What you have is a shock with a spring mounted to it. A wall mounted spring compressor is needed to compress the spring so you can remove the single nut off the top of the shock that holds the shock mount on and then you can replace the shock inside.
This is a very dangerous job if you do not have a good spring compressor and most shops can do this for you at a small price. If you are replacing the shocks then I would inspect the shock mounts for wear and replace those as well.

This is also a good time to install a set of Vogland or Eibach springs.

Yup, you canbring it someplace like Tires Plus and have them separate the spring from the shock assembly. I actually did it myself with a regular spring compressor that I rented from Auto Zone, but I do not recommend this method...it worked, but I was sweating bullets the whole time. One slip and you're --> or worse.

I have seen a spring "go through the roof" and it was unreal how much force they have. For the DIY guy/gal I think it's best left to a shops wall mounted unit and even then it can let go.
I have to swap out a set tomorrow with some Vogland springs and I hope it goes well but I never enjoy that job.

I finished the job today and let me tell you it wasnt an easy one, that spring really puts a strain on ur arm even with the compresser. It was fun but then it wasnt and that was for only one side. I tryed to replace the stabilize bar as well but the bottom side would not come out. Does anyone know how to remove this without have a torch put to it?

Although it looks that way at a glance, you dont. you have shocks all around.
the fronts are coil over shock not coil over strut. the giveaway is the presence of an
upper control arm which would not be found in a strut based front end.

I have a wallmounted spring compressor, and cringe whenever I have to change springs. I've seen what they are capable of before, luckily noone was in the way. A guy was changing front springs on an old Trans Am, and compressed them on a wall mount, and then slid old timing chains around them to hold them compressed. To make a long story short, he ended up buying a new fender and inner fender for his Trans Am, and was thankful he was still around.

What "stablizer" bar are you talking about? Btw, the Sway bar is not installed on this K member.. yet.

I am getting ready to have the shocks and springs replaced, how do I tell if the mounts need replacing, and is there a place to buy them besides autozone or pep boys? Is one brand better than the other?

I like to stick with Moog stuff personally so I'd find a local place that carries Moog/TRW stuff or get them online. If they have never been replaced then to me it's a no brainer to go ahead and do it while you have the springs off.

DR, any information on where to get the Moog Shock Mounts, I have searched alot of site and cant find anything about moog shock mounts for a thundabird.

Here's a stupid question... when I went to expressautoparts.com to look for the upper control arm prices they list under TRW:

What does LX Listing mean? for an LX model or something?
