Front shock removal...Where are you cutting with hacksaw?

I've seen several posts where comments are made abour using a hacksaw to cut the bottom bolt out because it is siezed. My question is, where exactly is the bolt being cut??? It seems to me that if the bolt won't come out using the BFH, then cutting it on the outside of the shock arm would be an exercise in futility. If you cut between the mounting arm and the control arm, you destroy the sleeve rendering it useless and requiring it to be replaced. That being the case, is that sleeve/bushing even serviceable, or would you need to get the control arm with the sleeve/bushing already installed? I am going to be doing mine in the next week or so, but I elected to go ahead and get new control arm assemblies because the ball joints need to be replaced anyway, and instead of going through the hassle and expense of taking the arms to a shop and getting the ball joints and bushings replaced in the old CA's, I'd only save about $30. The new assemblies will save me time, agravation, and will have the added benefit of new shock mount bushings as well.

I'm just looking sor some clarity on the issue of cutting the old bolt out.

Once you try to do it you'll probably resort to the hacksaw too.

I couldn't posision the shock, spring and control arm in a vice well enough to use a BFH on the bolt. I was replacing the lower control arm at the time aswell so I didn't really care about damaging anything while cutting.

Later for S&Gs I put the lower control arm in the vise and beat what was left of the bolt out. I was swinging a 4 lb sledge in a 3 foot arc and moving an 80lb workbench getting that bolt out.

i replaced my LCA and didnt have a problem with that bolt, it was stiff but it came off, coarse i had a life at the time, you can probably get the bushing that you are destroying by cuting off the bolt from ford

You cut the bolt inbetween the control arm and the shock fork. Yes you do destoy the bushing that is there, but it gets the shock off the car. You can order the bushing from Ford or get a moog one from Rock Auto. With you already having new control arms, I would cut away with out worry.

I've been unable to find any discussion concerning replacing the lower shock mount in the control arm. Has anyone actually done it?? Can you say "$pecial tool$ required!"?

"Bushing, Lower Arm Shock Mounting

The front shock absorber bushing is not replaceable. If replacement is required, the complete lower front suspension lower arm (3079) assembly must be replaced."

thats the whole lower control arm, i hope it didnt get messed up for your sake b/c the LCA is an expensive item from ford, its like 120 bucks or something

Thats funny that I have two brand new shock mount bushings setting on the floor just waiting to be installed. The only "special" tool that you need is a press.

god damn bastard front shocks!

Did a diff,fuel pump rear shocks and springs In a day and a bit.

we used heat,BFH,lube everyhting. couldnt get the bolt out. we eventually just used a springs compressor and put the springs on the old shocks so the car wouldnt look retarded...

but I want and need to replace me frony shocks...it just wont come out. not sure if cutting it witha hack saw between the bushing and the shocks mount would work... sometime soon I'll try it.
