$10 lowering...yes $10!!

well i was at the local muffler shop the other day because i was next door looking at window tinting so i looked over and saw the long line at the muffler shop..I already have my exhaust setup and im pleased with it but i was bored..

well i saw a guy in a civic with the whole kits and such and they lowered his car for about 10$. what they did was heat the springs by sticking the torch inbetween the wheel and fender so it would melt it down slowly and than when it was at the perfect height they would instantly cool it down with water on a high pressure hose..one by one he lowered all the springs this way...

um...isnt that like bad for your car?...i mean if you are gonna get lowering springs in like a month and this will do for now i guess it would be ok...but what if he didnt use them temporarely?..they cooled down the spring so it would harden again but would that be bad for the car?

is that a bad idea?

has anyone ever heard of this technique or torture for a car?

yeah i've seen and heard about them, heck I even have a set of SC springs that were heated to have a 4" drop, Would I put those on my cat? Hell no. The suspension isn't gonna be that great cause think about it, youre driving around with four springs that are already compressed, do you think they can be compressed any more when you really need that suspension like in a bumpy road, it ain't gonna be pretty.

If you're really looking for a cheap way to lower your car, cutting a coil from a spring is safer than heating them
oh and I would get the alignment checked afterwards just to be safe

What you are really doing is taking the tension out of the spring. I've been lowering cars for over 12 years, and have seen cars done this way before. They ride like crap, because the springs have no tension left in them, and they bounce all over the place. So the quick answer is NO!!!!!!! Don't heat the springs. If you want to lower your car for cheap, at least take the time to take them out and cut them. While that's not the recommended way to do it, at least you'll have a decent ride still.

i guess if you are just going for the slammed look then it might be ok, but the suspension will be bouncy as hell, and I think that you could bottom out on suspension pieces and this isn't safe.

Another mod like this is cutting coils off springs to lower the car.

You should have told him two ways to lower the car for free

1) Remove all four tires and rims (it saves on weight too)
2) Flatten all four tires (it saves on weight also)

Tell him its that new run flat system (taking the air out of all the tires) like the corvettes have on their tires just the tire makers keep it secret so everyone doesnt do it

The springs on my Mazda were heated in the front to make the Cv joints/half shafts perfectly in-line Ex hub and trans. But the way it was done I wouldnt suggest, A 330lb guy named darrin sat on the hood to weight it down while they were heating, Ill get pix later.

I wasnt the one that did that, the previous owner did. Instead of snaping a half shaft/cvjoint, the trans exploaded!! Good grip huh!!!

Before that they did break a cvjoint, it sent 3 steel ball bearings through the hood,
