Who has had broken springs?

One of the main reasons I lowered my car this soon was because I noticed one of my front springs was broken. As I was installing my set of Eibachs and Tokicos, I noticed that I had not one, not two, but THREE broken springs. Both of my front springs and one of my rear springs were broken, each having a fracture in the first or second coil from the bottom. I was in total shock, knowing that I had put nearly 10,000 miles on a car that had such a compromised drivetrain. I am aware that the Taurus' of certain years have problems with fractured springs, but have never read much (on this site anyway) about the MN12s having the same problem. It might have a lot to do with the temperature changes and road salt up here in New England, but I'd like to hear about everyone else's experiences. Thanks!

I've seen a few broken front springs on some of the MN12's that I've parted out. But keep in mind that I've owned quite a few MN12's, I have 14 of them right now.

My car was one year old, with 20,000 miles, when I bought it.

Shortly thereafter, I noticed the two springs on the driver's side were both broken at the first full coil above the bottom seat.

At approx. 150,000 miles, I replaced the rear springs with Sport springs, but the fronts remain unchanged at 222,500 miles.

I cannot detect any handling or suspension problems relating to the broken left front spring.

mine is broken too on my 94 and 96. you won't notice anything until you look at it and "oh shYt......"

My daily job is to fry rice for my customers....

the two rear springs of my parts sc were broken. When I installed the eibachs on my 93 all the springs were perfect and unrusted at 120k miles.

All 4 springs broken here, they've been upgraded though now.

my 95 broke a RF spring, it was changed at about 80k. My 97 still has all 4 Sport springs at 120k. They dont appear broken, but I'll see when I pull them off this winter how bad they really are.
Worn out shocks will increase the risk of breaking springs, but I don't see that talked about much.

3 of them broken at my Eibach/Koni upgrade. I moved to NOLA from Iowa so I'm going to say in theory here:
Sub zero winter day + heavy car + typically manic TCCOA driver = broken springs PS considering the newest MN-12 was made in 1998 this makes the newest ones 7 count em 7 model years old. The oldest ones will be able to vote in another 2 years...just to put this into perspective for you.
Age can't help either.

1995 850R with 18T, 3" downpipe, R.I.P. kit, ported intake,42lb injectors, N/A cams, 960 throttlebody, Rica tune(15psi in first and second 17psi in third and fourth). Bilsteins all around, V70R caliper and rotor upgrade, total lack of traction. IPD STB, Ultra Racing lower braces and RSTB.

paddycake your wrong , 1997 was the last year for bird cat, mn12, the linc was a another chassis designation. my 90 had never broke any springs, i owned it for 100,000 and 4 years. the 89 s/c i rebuilt and sold had 2 broken rears. the 89 i have now had 2 broken fronts, but i dont know my cars true history , so i cant guess why. the 93 i had sold had no issues with springs. and the 1991 parts car was ok too .

so the MK8's aren't MN-12's? or is it just the 98 MK8's that aren't MN-12's?

the mark chassis is called FN10, there are only a few slight differences between the mn12 and fn10, which is why they are considered basically the same chassis. the fn10 is a few inches longer, and I think thats one of the only things different, minus a few braces here and tehre.

It's an old thread, I know, but that's what I get for using the search function.

My fathers '90 3.8L T-bird LX had 3-broken springs when he bought it, my '91 3.8L Cougar LS had both front springs broken when I bought it and my current '96 XR7 has both front springs broken.....and possibly broken rears too (haven't looked back there yet) These cars eat springs like candy!?!

my 2 front springs are broken also. I have new springs just havent put them in yet, by the way....how hard is it to switch out springs???

Now, by "broken springs" does this mean they'll fall in 2 when you remove them? I replaced all 4 shocks in my car and all springs seem to be perfect, not even a speck of rust. Didn't notice anything. As far as I'm aware, the springs are all original...so they have 117,000 miles on 'em.

I had a heck of a time wrestling the front springs. Even with a spring compressor tool, I could not get it to crank down enough to allow easy installation of the spring onto the new shock. I had the tool as close to each end of the spring as possible (maybe one 'rung' away from each end)...but when removing the spring it expanded just enough to not allow me to thread the bolt on when re-installing. So what i did was wrapped a piece of chain around my jack and the shock and jacked the shock up until the spring compressed the inch I needed to be able to thread the bolt on. Took a few practice shots, but it did the trick lol.

Removed air silencer, U/D pulleys, K&N panel fiter, aux tranny cooler, JBL "10 Subwoofer /w cheapy 300 watt amp, Front and rear chrome license plate frames with clear plastic covers

I had a broken front spring, then switched out to some newer ones. A couple years later I lowered it with Eibachs and they were all fine. BTW, anyone that needs springs, I have my old set with about 75k on them from a 97 bird...$50 plus shipping.

Both of my front springs were broken on my 1994..
I have no idea how that could have happened....... :0
I believe the event would be best summed up by Bo and Luke!
Hit some "un marked" train tracks on a side road late one night.
There wasn't even a hill leading up to them on just a drop after them..
All four wheels lost contact then the front hit..
I was a little upset at that one...

Suprisingly between offroading a truck and owning old cars I have never broken a spring yet. Although on my old 77 caddy I managed to snap a spindle. It was a sub zero day and the spindle finally said no more It broke clean off. Knock on wood I won't have to replace anything on the t-bird because helping my bro install one on a `78 ford bronco was a major PITA between wrestling with all that heavy iron and trying to remove gazillion year old bolts. I'm not exactly looking forward to doing it on a t-bird too.

When I installed the Eibachs, oth of the rear springs were broken in the same place. And this was after only 3 weeks of a new shock install. Semms to be a weak spot. One of many.

Both front ones broke two years ago on mine and the rear was according to
the car testers ready to break at any moment... Not due to rust though...
They looked really good when I pull'em out...
Stressed out probably...

Both front spings on my son's 94 T-Bird are broken at the base and cause a clunking noise. BTW: How hard is it to change out these coil spings?
