IRS Subframe Poly or Aluminum Bushings,, lets get these made!

OK I got my IRS out of my car and am very soon gonna want to put it back in.

I have not looked into how much ford wants for these bushings but figure the for the probable cost i can have a machine shop machine me 8 aluminum or possibly have some urethane mounts made up and designed.

can someone point me to some companies that can design and build urethane units in small quantities?

i'm gonna search around and find a couple machine shops that can fabricate these spacers. i'd like to keep it Aluminum for weight saving as 4 big steel units would be large weights on all 4 corners.

does anyone have any input on problems I might run into or suggestions because i would love to hear them. the only prob i forsee with aluminum units its the welded steel subframe has 4 holes which are not all equal (hence filled with rubber) and cause it to be either loose or not fit without some grinding.

The urethane option seems like the best. I remember seeing a copany that was able to fill the rear diff mount with urethane to make it stronger and was curious how he did that. it would keep the noise down and still stiffen the suspension by quite a bit.

I also dont see a huge market for this item because of the amount of trouble it is to change the bushings and the amount of people that actually need this. So Im thinking a 1 time run of a small qauntity and once there gone there gone.

Please shoot me your thoughts.

I believe you're referring to Wynn's (www.texasthunderbirds.com) rear diff mounts. I would be interested in a set or two if they are made from polyurethane. I'm not sure if I'd want a set of aluminum ones.

aluminum. The hardest ones will be the front two.

91 5.0 sport:
M5R2 with B&M ripper, SC seats, 3.27 t-lok rear, 5-4.5 bolt pattern, cobra brakes front and rear, 95 Mustang cobra rims, and open exhaust.

I just wrote him to see if he'll talk to me about the urethane process he uses. I'm liking the urethane idea more and more because I can probably simply create a mold of the orig rubber bushing and cast em.

Where as the aluminum (which keeps costs high) plus the cost of a knowledgable machine shop seems a 2nd choice for now.

Also wanna find out more about these Taurus/Sable aluminum subframe mounts that they say fit our cars.

No, you can't just make a mold from a new Ford rubbber bushing. The OEM rubber bushings are compressed into the subframe. Poly does not compress. You'd end up with a piece that won't fit in the hole.

Who is "they", & where did you find out about using Tarus/Sable aluminum subframe mounts?

Do a search on Taurus Aluminum Cup Style Subframe Bushings and it pulls up a bunch,, yet I cant find the dimensions for em.

OK, I think I found the answer! I checked out this company who sells Urethane Rods! in a 36" 24" 12" lengths and can be gotten in a Shore#90 or #60 Hardness and can get em Nice RED! woohoo.

If I get a 36" length and cut it up I can machine out idividual Subframe mounts and then drill the center to accept a bushing for the bolt!

Gonna give the company a call and see what they got for me and how much $$$ this stuff costs. hopefully its not a B.S. company that requires a 500+ minum purchase.

OK Just got off the phone with em,, for $219 I can get a 4" Diameter 36" Length and in Color: Red with a Shore #90.

Seems kinda nice! I figure I can make 3 full sets of subframe bushings from this and sell them for maybe $150 a set?? Does that sound like a decent price?

I haven't made any as of yet (bigger things to take care of), but I plan to make at least a couple sets before too long. It seems like the deal you're looking into right now would be the way to go. I haven't tried machining polyurethane yet, but as far as I know, it won't be too difficult at all to do.

Gotta make a few more calls to a company that can possibly make these in the quantity I want,, gonna have to see what the costs would be first.

They are also sending me out a sample of all the Shore#'s they produce so I can more correctly determine which #hardness these should actually be done in.

HMM so the KB ones work? since the website there has gone to uselessness (compared to the old one) I guess I'll have to call Andrew to see if they even stock MN-12 stuff anymore.....

It sounds like you're referring to the diff case to subframe bushings. Brad is looking to make a set of subframe to body bushings.

I called em up and its for the Diff bushings,, not for the subframe.

I was laughing cause it says they are stackable? so if you got lowering springs then you can match the pinion angle LOL!

If anyone is familiar with polyurethane, I would like to get a opinion on what durometer hardness these should be made in?

I'm thinking either a 80A or 90A Shore ratings.

i got some aluminum subframe bushing for my sho but i never put them on... now did make some solid motor mounts with delrin and those thinks worked like a charm with no vibration...

Quick update: I just ordered a polyurethane rod, I'm gonna try to get 2 complete sets of bushings made with this. Should be completed within 3 weeks.

Looked into the SHO mounts and theres no way they would be close to fitting the Thunderbird Subframe.

Is 4" large enough diameter? Its been over a year since I had my subfram out, i don't remember how big the bushings were but it seemed like they were a bit bigger than that, but I could be wrong.

Former owner of 94 Bird with DOHC 4.6L swapped from a mark VIII

2011 CTS-V Wagon
1968 Torino was an original 289, C4, fully documented numbers matching car. Now: DOHC 4.6L/T-56 swapped, Cobra intake, IMRC delete, BBK long tubes and H pipe. Dynotech Aluminum Driveshaft, 9" rear with TrueTrac and 4.11's.

The top & bottom cups are exactly 4" in diamter,, the top is tapered so I will have to machine a 45* angle into that to fit the cup nicely.

have fun machining poly urethane, we did that for some stuff on our mini baja car, what a mess. hope it works out well though.
