cleaning cams

hey guys, just received some used cams and sprockets. i just planned on taking a rag and some WD40 to them to clean them up. is this an ok method?
also would soaking a rag in motor oil then wrapping up the cams be ok to store them?

spray with wd40 and wrap in plastic would work.
