Unhappy The Silver streak is toast..

I feel like a complete idiot after what I discovered this Saturday.. I have been in, and out of town a lot as of late, and the Bird has had to stay behind. I finally get sometime to go driving this Saturday. Before I ever start a car that has been sitting old, or new. I give the essential fluids a once over. Oil, check Antifreeze....... W.T.F!! The jug has a solid block of ice in it.

I bought it in Sep., the guy I bought it from showed me that it had a new radiator, and that should be no problem in the future. So, I thought maybe since the guy was mechanically inclined enough to R&R a radiator that he would know better than to put back only water.... Da** was I ever wrong... I looked at it before I left but, I didn't have an antifreeze tester it smelled like it had some in it. So, I gave in to the benefit of doubt.

While I was away some of the worst cold temps of the year set in, and I'll bet you know where Im going with this to. The block is nothing more than a paper weight at this point in time. Right along with the radiator as one of the plastic ends has a huge split in it. So, at this point Im out of a useable car.

I do have a Mustang but, it don't have a top on it as of yet. I ran out of money, and time to finish it before winter set in. I also have another Silver Bird but, the engine is fried in it as well. It was to be a fender, and trans donor.. 2011 needs to hurry up because Im sick, and tired of all the crap that has happened in 2010..... If '11 starts out as bad as this year I think I'll take a long walk off a short peer.(Joking of course). So, whats next thats one done in by fire, now one by Ice this year. Sorry about the rant just can't believe that I could let something so important slide..

Don't want to part with the Bird so, I have some friends on the salvage net searching for an engine donor. Never hurts knowing salvage yard owners, it tends to help A LOT.

Did the block crack or were you lucky enough for it to pop out a freeze plug, if that ever really happens? I might have read somewhere that the freeze plugs are used in the casting process. PI engines are cheap enough. I will know in a few days if my 32v is gone, but if you need one I might be able to sell it. You Pull It has an engine sale going on for $100 too, dont know about in your neck of the woods.

Isn't that the truth can't beat a free block. Thanks for the offer, a couple of years ago I could have took you up on it anyway. A very large portion of my family did long haul trucking, and wound up all over the place. The elders(My Aunt & Uncle) retired, and my cousins didn't want to continue the business. So, I don't really know what they are up to these days?

I have a few leads just have to scan the forum I know I have seen threads about installing later engines. Most of the ones located so far are late model. One in particular out of an 02 Mustang. Don't have any pricing as of yet. but, there are a couple real close to choose from.

LOL 5.4 would be fun. But, Im looking for more or less plug, and play. Maybe a few mods to make a later engine fit.

As for the block yes its got a good sized crack right below the head on the right bank. Heads may very well be ok though. However so far 0 water in oil. Looks like just a split water jacket. May be more damage to be found. I ran it but not long enough to get hot.

As far as I know there isn't a U pull near me. I've been a junk yard hopper since before I even had a car. I know almost all the yard owners around me, they have always given me great deals. I think I should be ok as long as the yard the engine comes from isn't local and is one of the bone heads that think they should be paid a premium for there junk. There are some that are that way around here. If I get lucky I should know tomorrow as Im heading out there to look. But, there is a yard that sales only by weight I have gotten stuff there like dash panels, and seats for next to nothing. I hope they have a good donor...

Yeh, I go to the one in Tallahassee pretty regularly, but it's quite competitive and busy there (something decent shows up, it doesn't last long). I have a few other yards that are about half the price and MUCH less picked over (nothing personal, but I keep them to myself).

I really do wish they would open a location near by me. Parts pricing can be quite excessive with some of these yards around here. At least the ones owned by A_holes or, people I don't know anyway. Some of the pricing I looked up on the PnP site, if you tried to ask for even a 1,000,000 engine here for that you would probably get laughed off the lot. Not to mention some of these places that only sell pulled engines. I had a friend that worked at one in particular, and they are the biggest crooks ever to walk the earth. They say "Engine dyno tested" but, that don't mean it runs worth a crap... I do however think that if I don't get a good response on pricing it may be worth checking one of the closer ones out. I didn't realize there were some in Florida.

What is your number so I can put it in my phone? I've thought about calling you a couple of times while there, just didn't have a name or number.

Where is H.G. AL?

It's sad since just a few months ago, I sent my 94 to the crusher. It had a perfectly good (all be it high mileage 280K) 4.6 in it. Would have been a perfect core for you and it was already lose in the car with no transmission....

Sorry for the long pause in responses. Been out of town again working. My engine hunt is still on going. But, with the weather we have had lately wouldn't matter if I had one. My friend is swamped with work and, I don't want to bother him with it.

Hazel Green, is just north of Huntsville a little ways. Yea, it is ashamed that 94 got squished block sounded rebuildable. Surely it would be cheaper to overhaul a good block, than buy new. Though I have only build SBC 350s in the past. And, one of those it only depends on just how much gas you wanna burn in a shorter amount of time =s how much it cost.

A local yard I have memorized had at least 10 later model Birds. Paid a visit today only 2 were there the rest were flattened a couple of weeks ago. The owner is doing a lot of clearing he plans to only focus on stocking late models 00-Up. Will only buy older models only to scrap.

There are some decent cars on that lot still but, here soon they are gone. So, I toured the lot, and pulled fuses relays also snatched up whatever was of use on the orange X cars. And, it was a miserable muddy day. I have enough fuses to last a life time, and never know when you might need a relay. Only thing I paid for was for a nice Grant steering wheel I snagged out of an 80's Cutlass.
