Need some help.

Well as you all know I got around to changing the plug wires. Well, the car still drops to 1k rpms underload and cruising(when od engages), but doesnt buck or anything. Is this normal in the cougars/tbirds?

I think you need to describe the problem better. From what I read (several times over to help me understand) you say that when you switch to OD off the car drops to 1k rpm? That is not normal, the RPM's should shoot up as you drop to 3rd gear.

If your talking about having the vehicle in OD off mode (OD light on) than flipping the OD back on (OD light off) than yes this would be normal at about 40MPH. However if I remember correctly my bird used to be at about 1100-1200 rpm and you could use cruise control.

Now if it drops to 1k rpm when your going a much higher speed and switch OD in either direction, something is wrong. I am not going to guess at every possibility without more information though.

No offense, but you remind me of my mother. She's an endless string of problems she wants me to fix for her.

I'm not trying to be mean to you, I'm just trying to be funny with a slight hint. Try to concentrate on one problem at a time. I know it's hard when your car has so many to fix, but welcome to the wonderful world of a mechanic!

....but od engages was initial problem.....

Ok moving on. if your OD is always on, light off, it should automatically go into fourth gear between 37-40 mph under light acceleration. If your accelerating hard, it will stay in 3rd longer and drop between 55-70, and finally when flooring it you can go up to 90-110 before it decides to drop into 4th. The only time it should pretty much go near 1k is on the first example the other two are more like 2000 and 2700 from thier higher rpms resepctively.

No bucking sounds like the auto trans is working correctly as you can't tell the shift easily, but you can see it on the rpms. Now if this is happening when your turning the od on and not accelerating because your playing with it to 'troubleshoot' the problem..... than thats the problem. Your not driving normally and your noticing abnormal things, drive normally and normal things will happen.
