Q: Do I need my fender liners on a Tbird Track car?

In a 95 Ford Thunderbird LX that will be a dedicated track car, is there any reason to keep the fender lines?

Looking at the shop manual, I don't see that the fender liners are protecting much.

Q: Please let me know if I've missed something and the liners are needed to protect some electrical wires or something I actually NEED in a track car.

It's not much of a weight savings but I'll take any pound I can shave off of this beast. Thanks in advance for your reply.

You live near SF, East Bay? I could use a passenger side fender liner. When my lower ball joint popped out, the tired rubbed the hell out of mine, haha. PM sent.

You have the cruise control and ABS on the LH side and on the RH side you have the charcoal canister and vacuum reservoir and the associated lines along with the air silencer. I would expect increased chances of sucking up water with the fender liners out. You may have already changed the induction system though.

On a track-only car, no you do not need them.

I pulled them off late this afternoon and in addition to losing 3.3Lbs per fender liner removed, I also found over a pound of dirt behind that spongy material that separates the wheel well from the door gap.

front bumper

Hi

Loose the piece under the front bumper cover.
The headlight header is a good piece to sell.

Get a power steer cooler if you don't have one.
Also cover pump opening with a rag over the cap.

* I've already ordered a PS cooler and it's install is on the TO DO list.

for a track only car, depending on how much time you have, and the tools you can use, there is a ton of weight to be removed off these cars.

1) Ahh, so you mean the harness and whatnot. Headlights are needed if we do the 24 hour race vs. the two 12 hour sessions. I don't know the schedule of the Lemons race we are entering yet (Targeting Infineon in Oct) but the possibility remains there.

2) Yeah, I looked and the 95 cooler is a crappy u shaped tube with NO fins. I found a cheapier U shaped tube WITH fins so the gameplan is to route the PS fluid out of the old cooler and into this one (cooler = better).

While we are discussing weight loss for a track car, is there any reason I may want to keep the underhood heat liner?

If I understand things correctly, the downsides of NO liner are:
* hood will become very hot to touch if I don't get some airflow underneath the hood.
* paint could start to discolor (don't care for me).

The upside is weight loss

I probably won't screw with it until I decide what to do with the hood (cut outs, ghetto cowl hood, or maybe just standoffs) but I just wanted to poll you folks.

I havn't had mine in for years, no cooling problems, no discoloration, nothing. It's more there for sound deadening and in the event of a fire, a fire blanket.

It's about as weighty as a sheet of paper though

Hey, if I'm scraping the tar off the bottom of the car and considering disassembly of the A/C compressor, OCD enough to trim "sheets of paper" off the car.

Ugh NO!!

I cut my front bumper in half to save weight! You should gut the doors if you can.
at least the inner parts.
Loose as much glass as you can. Glass is heavy!

How much into the doors do you recommend? The door panels are already off and ready to go to a good home (if anyone wants them).

Obviously you want me to ditch the glass, the window motor, and any excess wiring.

Are you also suggesting that I take a sawzall (or any kind of cutter) and take out the inner door frame as well?

In addition to the full cage, Lemons rules explicitly require 2 horizontal door bars on the driver's side.
Similar bracing is NOT required on the passenger side but we'll probably do it anyway.

I'll have to consider your thoughts on the inner vs. outer skin.
Right now, the car is being stored inside/outside and is street legal. I'll put this tip in my list of tasks to consider as we get closer to the race date (and strip out the glass).
