Unhappy Bad Fuel Pump?

Well today when I was leaving work, started the car up. Started fine, went to put the car in gear went in gear fine. Pulled out and the car just about stalled on me.

I went to auto zone and used their fuel pressure tester, and saw i was getting 10 psi, but i am not 100% sure if I did it correctly when I tested it, as it was my first time and I had to rush to get it done.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel filter under the car on the passenger side.

Then, check fuel pressure INTO the fuel filter, and if it's low, drop the tank and replace the pump and strainer with new (or the whole float assembly - quicker and easier, but costs more.)

Hint: If you change out the whole float assembly, go Ford only - Airtex sometimes works, sometimes leaks like a sieve. QC seems to be hit and miss.

Considering your other posts, if it's not the fuel filter plugged, I'd take it to a competent mechanic.

Yah, when I got around to swapping the fuel filter on the wife's Cougar, it was on backwards (!!) and what I drained out was nasty brown (!!!!)

Never stumbled or failed but that's just good PM IMAO.

I have no idea how to change it, so i am going to have to see if I can get it done for about $300 for labor, without purchase of the fuel pump.

Change the fuel filter first.

Drive the car up on ramps.

Get under the passenger side.

There's two bolts (8 MM IIRC) that hold a plate on, that you can see a hose clamp in.

Release the two bolts.

Use the fuel line quick-connect release tool, release the fuel line (note: If you haven't vented pressure, it'll spew when you release the first line. If it's plugged, it'll spew on both.)

Open the hose clamp.

Pull the filter out.

Slip new filter in.

Tighten hose clamp.

Slip hoses on filter until the quick-connects CLICK.

Put the bolts back in.

Start car up. It stalls. Cuss, start it again, it runs

Back off of ramps.

Check fuel pressure at this time. If it's back proper, it's the fuel filter.

A new one is not that much at O'Reilly's - but I had to pick up a 1990 SC filter to fit the car, the one they list won't fit the filter shield (too big around).

You can unscrew the gas cap also before you remove the filter

Odds are it's not the fuel filter - but I'd check it anyway in case you sucked some crap up and it's plugged the filter.

That's a LOT easier to check than the pump/strainer, so I'd always check it first.

Thats what I do. If it does flow through and gets progressively harder to blow through I consider it partially clogged. Sometimes it just doesnt blow through and the air you blew in will push back into your mouth when you stop blowing, so be careful. Gas in the mouth doesnt taste good.

The easiest way to determine if you have a fuel delivery problem is to hook up a fuel gauge with a pressure release valve. First you check the pressure key on engine off. Then you crank the car and check the pressure, if its close to specifications, get a container and measure how much gas it puts out. One of my own personal standards, since most manufacturers dont specify fuel volume specifications, is to see if the car can pump out ~16 oz in 30 seconds, if it can, the fuel delivery is sufficient. If the pressure drops and the car dies when you open the pressure release valve to take the measurement, there is certainly not enough fuel coming to the fuel rail and that can be caused by a restriction or leak in the fuel system or a weak fuel pump.

That's my main point. Sure one could do that, but once you've narrowed it down to a fuel delivery issue, I think the filter should just be changed anyways just before going to the fuel pump.

Considering how cheap and easy replacing the fuel filter is there's no reason to just go ahead and change it whenever the fuel delivery is in question. Even if a fuel filter has been changed recently there's always the chance that some sort of residue or blackage has moved from the tank and is now inside the filter causing these problems.

In other words that's what GM is trying to say, I think.

I always let fuel pour out of the tank line into a glass container, so I can see what's coming out of the tank.

Did the car start back up?

What are the odds the fuel pump pressure was correctly checked? (vac line off reg, at idle)

I've taken a few gas baths in the past, some of which i have drank, I don't think it's affected me at... wait what are we talking about?

The car started up just fine. I didnt do the test 100% right im sure of it, because I only cranked it over once, when i know now that you have to crank it a couple of times to have the pressure go all the way up.

I didnt have anyway to look up that information as I was in the autozone parking lot.

I have noticed that under loads the rpms will stay at a constant, but if I try to give it gas the rpms drop down to 1k. Mind you I am usually at 1.5k

I think you are jumping to conclusions in terms of thinking it is the fuel pump at fault.

No its a 95, but I relieved all the fuel pressure out of the system. one turn to the ON position will not give the 100% full pressure.

I should add that my car doesnt do this when its cold. Only when hot.

Fuel Filter

FWIW, my engine was running a bit rough. I checked the fuel pressure and it was like 35 lbs. I pulled the fuel filter out and tried to blow through it and it was flat out plugged up. I don't understand how I was getting good fuel pressure when I couldn't even blow through it!!! A new, clean filter is VERY easy to blow through.

With the new fuel filter in place, the car went back to running normal.
