backup lights not working still!!

So I got a new mlps switch. Didn't work. Checked for grounds and made sure there were no blown bulbs or fuses. And still nothing. I'm a little flabbergasted.. could it be the box hanging in the trunk? I think I'm just gonna run a toggle switch to it until I Get it inspected cus I keep gettin pulled over lol

I think there is a relay for them. I'll have to check the service manual to be sure though. It's in my trunk though and it's too hot to go outside lol. I'll grab it when the sun goes down.

Pulled over for backup lights? Do you mean tail lights or the actual lights that turn on when you go into reverse?

I love my V8, but I'd love it more if all 8 cylinders worked. (they do now)

The reverse lights when I shift into reverse. Yea wv is stupid when it comes to stuff like that. I also got pulled over for no inspection and they let me go with a warning and told me to go get it fixed lol

In the service manual it's pretty straight forward. They tell you to check the bulbs, fuse, grounds. Check input and output for the fuse. If you just replaced the MLPS try one of the last tests;

Take the bulbs out, Turn the key to run, engine off. Put it in reverse and use a test light to see if you're getting power to the sockets. If not, check the output on the MLPS. It's a black/pink wire that goes directly to the backup lamps. No other switches or relays in the circuit. Check the connector and make sure that wire is solid. If you have output on the black/pink wire from the MLPS then the wire is shorted out somewhere in the path to the bulbs.

If you just replaced the MLPS how did you adjust em w/o backup lights?
Maybe thats where your problem is! Normally you turn the key to run, engine off,
put the car in reverse and then turn the MLPS slightly until your backup lights are on.
Then tighten the bolt's. You would be surprised how little movement it takes for the backup lights to not turn on.

x2, until one day in 2005, where i replaced my MLPS, took the car for a spin and as i come back my ex told me that my backup lights ain't working.
The above hint i got out of a Haynes for a E-150, 92 thru 2001. Worked for me!

That is good to know! I would expect if the Neutral thing isnt working though, there is slop like crazy in the shifter tube area. I am so glad we dont have to mess with that on our cars. The only thing we can really get slop in is if the cable stretches. Proper alignment is important anyway and can cause some serious driveability problems. Someone I know put a trans in an 01 f-150 awhile back and swapped the MLPS to the new one. He drove it and thought it needed a new trans due to all the slipping and strange shifting it was doing. I checked to see if the reverse lights were turning on at the right time and they werent. So after putting it back on the lift, the neutral marks were WAY off. Lined them up and it is still driving fantastic.

That's really good info to have, my MLPS should be coming in today or tomorrow from Rock Auto and now when the guy puts it in I'm definitely going to check the backup lights. Something I wouldn't have thought of before.

lol man, I would have just said screw the backup lights. They arent even part of the vehicle safety inspection in TX.

They have vehicle safety inspections in Utah but not in Arizona, so that's an extra $45 a year for registration in Utah. In Arizona I get 2 year registration and it's cheaper. I got my drivers license in Arizona in 1999 and it's good until 2027. Gotta love a state that doesn't like paperwork
