Speedometer/odometer question

My speedometer was on the fritz by not reading anything below 30mph. It did this for a couple months before eventually dying completely. The odometer doesn't work either. I replaced the odometer gears a couple years ago so I am looking at the VSS. Is this the issue? I cant pull codes cause alll I get is an error message,

VSS was switched with another with no change. I took apart the speedometer and everything looked kosher. Im broke as a joke so any recommendations will have to be done cheaply

Maybe the speedo unit died. Check the wiring for the VSS for cracking or bare wire.

The 4.6 yes, the 3.8 no.

(4.6 is OBDII, 3.8 isn't.)

Put on a new VSS and took apart the cluster again and got it working.
