1997 T-bird speedometer wipers radio stopped working

My 1997 T-bird had been sitting in the driveway for about 3 months. I've recharged the battery and cleaned the interior due to mildew. I've driven it a few times just to keep it running. Recently, when I went for a drive, the speedometer and radio were not working. When I got back home, I checked other accessories and found that the wipers also stopped working. Everything else is working: AC, heater, lights, gauges, blinkers, etc. I checked all the fuses, both under the dash and under the hood. I disconnected sand reconnected the wiring harness at the firewall. I bought a computer from Flagship One (Flagship One Inc | PCM | ECM | ECU | Engine Computer) and installed it and charged up the battery to a full charge. No change. Has anyone experienced this problem and found a fix? Thanks.

Did you change the ECU to fix the wipers and radio? The ECU by the air cleaner? I don't believe there is any connection from the EEC-V ECU to those devices.

The speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, coolant temperature, voltage gauge, and oil pressure gauge get their power from the same input to the cluster; if the others are good, the problem is within the speedo circuit itself.

The only OTHER input it has is the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

It's not impossible that the speedo has failed; it could also be the VSS input.

For the radio - the only thing in common it has with the CLUSTER is the illumination input.

Well, there's commonality back at the ignition switch - although I've never heard of that combo failing with a dying switch, it may be worth while to check your ignition switch to make sure it's not separating on you.

I'm with 97 V8 Swap - I don't know why you swapped the ECU unless a) you don't have the EVTM (Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual) for your car and b) you're think 2017 not 1997. In which case, a) BUY ONE. NOW. From Ebay, or from HelmInc publishing (on line at the commercial address). You will do nothing but waste your time and money buying parts totally unrelated to the problem at hand. b) Remember, this is before the BCM controlling everything; most of the car is controlled by local controls, not a single BCM or CTM.

The wipers, radio, cluster and few other miscellaneous things run off of a separate terminal on the ignition switch, (I believe its grey with yellow tracer) so you might have an ever so common Ford ignition switch falling apart issue.

I've come into this world with nothing and still manage to have some of it left.

1994 Thunderbird, 4.6 V8, PI heads, SVO Blower, 8# pulley, 2.5 duel exhaust, 4R70W, MarkVIII converter, Mark VIII differential, Trac-Loc, 3.73 gears, H&R 1.5 lowering springs, bilstien rear shocks and SC front struts.

Just check for power on all the acc and run terminals with the ignition switch in the run position

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I Googled my problem a couple of months ago and found someone had an almost similar problem a few years back. The suggestion was to replace the ECM. Yes, I replaced the one in front of the passenger door. I did just buy a manual. Hopefully, it will have some wiring diagrams and other useful info. Thanks for the pin-out of the ignition switch.

The ECM doesn't control Wipers, Radio or any other accessories. on newer vehicles (2000 and up) some accessories are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM) but none of that info applies to the MN12.

For wiring diagrams, you want the EVTM (Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual). That's the OTHER book you should have.

(I also have the wiring diagrams for my 1991 Cougar, picked up off Ebay. It's not as easy to troubleshoot with as the EVTM, but it's nice for the occasional rabbit hunt.)
