check engine light

Engine check light just came on for the first time since new on my 92 Sport 5.0 Seems to be running fine and seems to come on only after you go a couple of miles down the road.Should I take it to Autozone for a scan? Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't think AZ will be able to do anything with it since it's OBD-I.

However, here's some excellent info on pulling codes and doing self tests:

Scroll down about halfway for the various pages about codes and how to pull them.

The "couple miles down the road" concept screams EGR to me but by all means get a obd1 code reader.

My EGR works great but all parts have been replaced in the last few years. I was cruising to my cheap gas place today and the computer was saying 26-32mpg at 55mph with 3.73 gears.

Then when I got home I noticed about 8 feet of rub rash with something grey on the right side. I hope it buffs out.

1992 Tbird LX 5.0, 3.73 gears, 1995 Cobra intake, deleted air silencer, 2.5" mandrel bent dual exhaust, SCP shorty headers. Updated four-hole fuel injectors. SK shift kit in AOD. Vogtland 0.9" springs, Tokico and Bilstein shocks.

Autozone does sell a Ford OBD1 scanner (I have one) but I'm not sure if their code pulling service will cover using it on your car. They mostly just send the HS kid out there with the OBD2 box they use on all the cars.

You can attempt to read it by reading the blinky lights but this box automates that process.
