97 Mark VIII ECM swap in my 95 Bird

OK I finally decided to swap the ECM in my 95 DOHC T-Bird to a 97 Mark VIII after deciding the knock sensors can be utilized especially when using nos and all my other stuff will have more adjustablity for tuning.

So here is my question, Do I still need the ignition module on the fender?
I was told it is internal in the Lincoln ECM but 97 has the same dual coils not cop.

I'm repinning the harness again lol

Thanks, Shane

You eliminate it, you’ll need to jump and bypass some of the wiring to it though, since the sensors and outputs will now come and go directly to the PCM.

The knock sensor curve of the Mark PCM isn’t particularly good though, it’s both sensitive and heavy handed in the timing it pulls, and can’t be adjusted via tune.

Yeah, the knock sensors Will protect your engine, but totally kill performance.

I added them to a car when I started tuning, and they are no longer used; they're too sensitive, and roll back shit way too far, and don't roll it back in for 10's of seconds.

I used them for less than a week.

They can trigger off things that aren't knock, as well, like timing chain slap. (100k mi + engine...)

Engine is fresh and pretty much stock of sorts.
It has the V internals from a Continental which I don't understand.( the crank is a 6 bolt flywheel but has cracked rods and floating pistons like the cobra had ) the block is from an 02 explorer, what the knock sensors are. Cylinder heads are from the dead 96 Cobra engine I had in the car.
I figured I killed it running the Cobra ECM no knock sensors bad gas who knows for sure just blew head-gasket and ruined it with water in oil. don't wan't to do that again so figured I would go to the Mark VIII ECM and use the 02 sensors which aren't as screwy. however if the timing gets too much retard and doesn't pick back up I may just hook my Alky kit back up.

You won't like it; the fix is apparently going to the 03-04 EEC, which has better knock code.

I can tune the 03 and up with my HP tuners, and have a lot more adjustment than the X-Cal 4 on it currently.
I just don't think I can run my dual coil packs on the later ECM and really don't want to change it over to COP because it wont be correct for the car.
I do already have the valve covers and coils as well as the MSD adapters to run the COP set up with my MSD DIS-4, but after getting the stuff together just didn't want to do any more wiring.. LOL
Decided I want it too look correct for a 95 T-Bird sorta.
Nobody would notice it having those wide DOHC heads and funny intake with the two meth nozzles.

Shane:
Have you ever considered an aftermarket Knock sensor gauge?
I have one on my lemons car after abusing a few 302s. This way, I know if there's an issue and can back off before we break something. Since it sounds like you do drag racing, I assume you are looking for the same.

Here's the one I use.
Knock detection device

The sensor itself came off a late model VW turbo vehicle from the junkyard. Easy to find and remove at the junkyard. I then bolted it to something solid on the block and it works like a charm.
You can test it by whacking a rubber mallet against the block and watching the gauge.

65 euros?!!

I need to make some of these.

It's an easy circuit; I think Don published a schematic in his book... I got it from him, anyway.
