Windshield chips

When the sun hits my windshield just right there are tons of speckles all over the windshield. I used some bartender's friend and steel wool to try to clean it well. Upon further inspection it's a whole bunch of chips. it looks like a ton of tiny rock were thrown at the windshield. I'm assuming my only option at this point is to replace it. But I wanted to ask if there are other options. Thanks.

Insurance should take care of it for you, if it's that bad just get it taken care of and get it changed.

Insurance only will take care of it if
A: you still have comprehensive coverage on a 20+ year old car, and
B: the damage to the windshield happened suddenly and accidentally

Numerous small chips that accumulated over time will not be covered by insurance. Also even if the windshield did break such that it had to be replaced, you would still have to pay your deductible, which would probably be more than the cost of a replacement windshield. In short, just pony up the cash and get the windshield replaced.

The local Safelite charges under $250 with tax at their shop; a bit more if they come to you.

He might want to check with his insurance.

I've had windshields replaced with chips and there's no deductible on glass here in Massachusetts with comprehensive coverage. Things might be different in different states.

Different states have different laws and this is reflected in what your policies can/will give you.

In CO, I was able to get a new windshield with only a $25 deductible (much less than my comprehensive)
In TX, I was able to get a new windshield with only a $100 deductibel (much less than my comprehensive)
In CA, making a windshield claim would have cost me my comprehensive coverage. Therefore, I think I spent $250 to get a new front glass windshield.

When I had State Farm insurance in California it was only $50 deductible to replace the windshield ( even after my cowl hood flew up into It .. twice ).

All depends on your insurance / state.

Doubt you can save it. I second the suggestion to have it replaced regardless. Check first w/your auto/home insurance to find out if it's covered based on your details, etc.

Good luck.

Thanks Joe. Yea, many, many a joyful mile in the Tbird. I bought the car while I was stationed in Missouri. I've driven it as far west as Oklahoma and Kansas City, Kansas also trips to Ohio, Florida and Texas and every state in-between. In the northeast I've been up to Carlisle and of course the JBMN Summer Blast in Martinsburgh, West VA. I'm much less adventurous these days as I have so much money tied up in the car.

LOL ... yea, I thought I'd change it up. I have many monkey variations in my Avatar repository. The first one, with the guitar, cowboy hat, Beer in hand and cigar in mouth is still my favorite. The rest are just a sampling of my collection.

I had a windshield that looked like someone dumped sand all over it and turned on the window wipers without any cleaner. it was horrible but got it replaced and I think windows usually go for around 200 bucks. its a good chance to look for rust around the edges while the window is off. awesome way to spend 200 bucks tbh and youll be glad you did. I agree with checking if insurance would pay for it
