AC comp clutch cycling pressure switch?

I'm about to add some refrigerant to my 89 T'ird A/C.
Can I just disconnect/remove the pressure switch sitting atop the accumulator low pressure port while I add refrigerant in what I would call the normal way then reinstall it? Or is there some magic this switch controls that I'm not aware of? Thanks for any clues or advice.

I don't know how the 89s are with R12 but on the 94+ R134a cars, there's a dedicated charging port next to the cycling switch. In either case, there should be a check valve under each which will prevent refrigerant loss if caps/switches are removed.
