83-88 Exhaust question

What exhaust setup's (single, dual or 2-1-2) were on the 83-88 Birds from the factory? I need to find out what they were for the V6, TC and 302/Sport cars, and if they were different depending on the trans type. Anyone have any info on this?

I had a 1988 Thunderbird with a 302 5.0L engine. I had the factory exhaust system changed from the lousy stock set-up to a true dual, it had B&K headers, a custom H-pipe, and 2.5 inch pipes all way from the headers to the back end. I had Flowmaster mufflers that had offset - offset ends on them.

The original setup had factory exhaust manifolds going to one pipe, then behind the transmission it had a Y-pipe going to 2 mufflers. It was soooo constricting! Sorry but I don't have any pics of it. I got rid of this car in 2001 when I got my 97.

Hope this info helps. By the way, why do you need to know?

Thanks for the info so far guys. A friend of mine is publishing another Thunderbird book to include the late model years. His first book was from 55-66 Thunderbirds.

So to recap so far for the 1983-1988 models:
V6's - Single exhaust
302 - 2-1-2
TC - ???
Sports - ???

Can anyone help fill in these last blanks?

My 83 V8 Heritage had a single exhaust factory. I converted to a dual exhaust and the biggest problems were axle clearance (thunking sound over large bumps) and fuel pump clearance (exploding death hazzard). So not all fox V8 cars were dual......

I got a reply on another site that the 83-86 TC had single exhaust, and the 87-88 TC had single if auto trans, and dual if manual. Can any TC owners confirm that?

It also sounds like the 302 cars had a change in the exhaust system from a single exhaust in the early years, to a 2-1-2 or duals in the later. The hard part is finding out when that change happened...

Also, if you would, please be very specific when you say 'duals'. I want to make sure theres a difference between 2 pipes front to back or just 2 tailpipes. Thanks for everyones help so far!

I drove an 86 V8 car that had single exhaust as well. I would have to guess that the change happened for the 87-88 body style. Ive never seen a 83-86 with factory dual exhaust, or dual exit, but maybe someone else knows more.

I can say this, standard 302 models had single exhaust from the factory.

My buddy had a 86 5.0 elan with single exhaust and a buddy at school has a 87 5.0 with single exhaust. So A) maybe dual exhaust was an option for the 5.0 or B) maybe if a 302 has dual exhaust, it isn't original.

I know that some TC's had dual, not sure which years though....

My '83 Heritage 302 had single exhaust from the factory. Downtubes went in to two cats, then a Y-pipe, then one pipe snaked back to the rear. I believe it only had one muffler, too. It was very small diameter pipe... 2"? Something like that.

There were several powertrain revisions between '83 and '88, so you might not be able to lump them all into that category.

For the 87-88 TCs, Autos had single exhaust and for the 5-speeds they had 1 into 2.Kinda like a Y pipe right after the trans cross member.

Thanks a bunch guys, this really helps out a lot. I think the last thing is the 302 Sports, which from what I've been able to gather, has duals. I just need to confirm if it's a true dual or just a 2-1-2. Thanks again everyone...

I had (have) one of the 85 anniversery models w/302. "special" blue paint w/white wide body molding. The same color that was standard of every 86 I saw (seemed that way!). I changed to true duals all the way back---had to wing it though and was really simple. with some minor mods.
Mustang unequal shorties (fox body of course), Mac "off-road" H-pipe, mustang tailpipes------all 2 1/2".
1. flow tube extentions to acct for extra wheelbase.
2. fuel filter had to be moved, was in way of pass muffler.
3. tailpipes kinda close to front corners of fuel tank.
4. used "LX" tailpipes (w/o turndowns) use turn-down extentions for extra length to rear bumper.
5. Double-hump x-member---std fox body.
6. hanger bkts on frame not there for rear muffler mts. available from fomoco.
7. rear tailpipe hanger bkts have to be fabed.
You may have to screw around with plastic fuel lines or replace. Re-locate of fuel filter causes some fabrication. Fox T-bird is only long wheelbace mustang w/facelift!! Dont know about 87-88's. Suspect they are not greatly different from 83-86 except for 8.8 and disc brakes (TC)
