Please Help me. Turn signals not working.

First off, please forgive me for posting this question in 2 different forums. But it's somewhat urgent to me. I have a 1997 Cougar XR-7. The other day I had a blowout and when I tried to turn my hazards on, I noticed that they didn't work. Then, when I was driving home I noticed that all of my turn signals no longer worked. I could no longer hear the characteristic "clicking noise" that would come on whenever my turn signals were on. And the green arrows on the instrument panel did not light up.

I was talking with a mechanic at the tire place and he told me it might possibly be my "flasher" unit. I checked the fuses in the fuse box and they all looked good. I have a HANES manual for my car and I read through it trying to figure out where this flasher thing was, I couldn't find it anywhere. Supposedly it's rectangular and located to the right of the steering column on a bracket. The HANES manual includes an illustration of the unit and where it's located, but the illustration is awful. It doesn't explain where the particular unit is and the illustration it shows looks like 200 other different units underneath the steering column. Also, I dont know if it means on the "right" side of the car facing the steering wheel or the "right" side facing the front of the vehicle.

I decided to go buy a replacement flasher at autozone, in hopes that I could look at it and get a good idea of what it looked like so I could find it and replace it. The flasher unit the guy at autozone gave me is a round cylinder with 2 prongs that plug into something. I didn't see anything like that anywhere. It doesn't even look like the unit illustrated in the HANES manual. Can someone please tell me where this thing is or if the flasher is even causing the problem. Or if I even have the right part from autozone. Thanks, Everyone. I would really appriciate it if I could get some help on this. I drive about 30 minutes to and from college everyday, and I hate people who don't use signals.

Try 'wiggling' your hazards light switch, frontwards and backwards. Make sure it is up all the way.

If this doesn't work, it's probably the multi-function switch itself, with either dirty contacts, or it's just plain ole wore out.

The multi-function switch costs in the neighborhood of $50, and in case you don't know, the "turn signal lever" is part of the multi-function switch.
