Air silencer removal help

What is the air silencer and what is the point of taking it off? Also, I wanted to know how to remove it. Thanks

The air silence is a tube that connects to the ait box, it is there to make the intake quieter. To remove it turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, pull back the fender well plastic towards the front and pull it out. When you remove it you get more of a deeper intake sound.

Also, since you have an 89, you might have to turn the wheel back over all the way to the right to pull the silencer out. It's tedious but worth it.

It will make your intake louder. There is debate as to whether it actually will let your engine breath better. Personally, unless you've gotten some significant mods done to your intake & exhaust, I see no other benefit other than making the engine sound better, especially at WOT. It's one of the easiest things to do.
  • Remove the top of the airbox.
  • Pull the filter.
  • There are 3 nuts to remove at the bottom of the airbox. You will need similar nuts and bolts from the hardware store to replace these bolts as they are attached to the air silencer that you are about to remove. Buy some.
  • These nuts attach to the air silencer within your fender.
  • Pull the bottom of the airbox out of there.
  • Next, turn your wheels to the left to unscrew the wheel well liner retaining screws.
  • Once removed, turn the wheels to the right and pull back on the wheel well liner and tuck it back towards the back of the wheel.
  • You should see the black and dirty air silencer hanging by a clip.
  • Pull down on the thing and it should just drop. You may have to do some wriggling around with it to pull it out the bottom of the fender and front bumper cover.
  • Your's should look like a squarish thing with a trumpet looking inlet.
  • Screw the wheel well shroud back into place in the same manner you took the screws out.
  • Now go back up top and put the airbox back in place.
  • Feed the new bolts up through the holes into the airbox by reaching through the now open hole in the bottom of the airbox and secure the box with the washers and nuts.
  • Put your filter back in and reattach the cover. that should be it.

You may also want to put a screen in the intake at the bottom of the airbox, but it makes it a bit more difficult to reattach the airbox if you are doing it on your own.

Apparently not. Seems the system was well designed, if the pic is the same as your 5.0.

Is this the same setup as yours?

Unless there is some baffles within the CAI.

All I could find. The air intakes not the same or similar, meaning coming from the wheelwells in a similar manner?

I'm looking at a Chiltons and they don't list the 5.0 in 83 in the engine codes, but they do show the pic I linked to. As well, it does not show the 5.0 as EFI until 1988.

Interesting...

At any rate, if your intake is running into the fender well, it's easy enough to tell by detaching the intake and/or looking up from under the fender. I'm not failiar with Fox body, so take it for what it's worth.



Well...actually no...give it a bit more credit than that.
