Mustang Brakes.

are the brakes on the 02 mustang any better than stock 95 t-bird brakes? is it dual piston or single?. and would they fit on my car?

100 times better

I did the install a few months back..MASSIVE difference, once I got it sorted out and the pads seated.

It is not a difficult job, just swap out the brackets, make up lines(I got adapters from Russell and run stainless lines)...or take your stock lines and mill them to fit the Mustang calipers.

The pads are MUCH larger, and the calipers are aluminum, making them able to handle heat better. My rotor warping issues are over...even with the regular 100-0 stops, fairly hard severe braking, I have yet to warp my rotors, and while I used to boil the fluid and fade the brakes with the old system...that is no longer an issue. JUst get the calipers, pads and brackets, use Grade 8 or better bolts, and you are all set. I also recommend good rotors, I am running Wagners stock replacements, the FoMoCo and cheapos are garbage.

Question on all this....

you are talking about JUST a caliper swap...right? if so, are there clearance issues, or does everything just swap in nicely?

i have 15" rims, so my brake choices are pretty much nothing at the moment. A friend of mine picked up some '02 twin caliper GT brakes for his '95 GT convert. really cheap....so i know i could find the front calipers.

ok....so what other info can you throw out here?
adapters are you talking about? where do you get them, how much? etc.

I noticed some sqeaking and squealing today on my way home....saw bad signs on my passenger side disk (disk front/drum rear). I figure i'm due for a brake job soon...so any extra info you can throw out here would be greatly appreciated.

Calipers

I know the calipers clear the 16" SC wheels I have with no issue, and I am pretty sure they will clear the 15" wheels.

The parts I used were:

2 2000 Mustang caliper brackets-(XR3Z-2B292-AA, I am pretty sure is the part number)

2 Russel 640481 bango fittings-I installed my old hose's bolt thru it, into the caliper, using new copper washers

2 Russel 659230 braided stainless brake hoses-NOT DOT legal, but they work awesome...I have used the same type of hoses for years in race and street machines, never has one failed on me.

2 Russel 640421 adapters-goes from the stock steel line to the stainless braided.

Match it all up with some good brake pads(I have tremendously good results with Wagners SX804, or the MX804..The SX is a Severe duty pad, carbon metallic...takes a bit of time to seat properly, but once they seat, they work great). Stay away from "discount" store brands...Wagner, Raybestos(ONLY the top shelf stuff...NOT Raymold like Putz Boys sells)or Performance Friction...you get what you pay for...I am also told KVR makes an excellent pad...but I have no experience with them, I have just heard the hype...

thank you very much for the info. when i get the money, i will definitely be purchasing new calipers. even if i dont use them now, i will use them when i swap bolt patterns to the SN-95 pattern (eventually)...so either way, i'd need new brakes...(trying to rationalize all this to myself )

Can you use the brake lines form a 99+ mustang instead of modifying
the tbird lines or buying aftermarket?

I have the mustang brakes on a car with stock 15 fan wheels, no problems.
Mustang lines have a different compression end fitting. You could probably change the hard line with the right tools. I found it just easier to use the stock ones and modify them or the caliper.
i will also suggest the Quiet Stop pads from Pep Boys/Raybestos. Ceramic filled. Very good braking all around. The KVRs tend to need heat, the stock ones have lots of dust , but the QS ones really are nice. No fade as far as I can tell either.

'stang Hoses

They are completely different hoses. The hardline end is different, and they are not as long. Modifying your T-bird lines is a simple task, just on the side of the fitting that goes onto the caliper, file the side that hits the caliper's lip until it clears easily...that's all, takes less than 5 minutes per side with a good file and a vice...but use wood or aluminum in the vise to wold the line steady, and flush it with brake-clean after you are done...

If you want to take care of your brake lines for good, i'd recommend the Goodridge SS braided lines available at TireRack(around $120 for all 4). I believe you will have to use the banjo bolts from the Mustang lines with the Mustang calipers due to length difference.
