question about front end hood

the black stuff under the hood. is this sounds dentining? can u take this off and not having any negative effects to the car (example:paint fades cause of heat?) i have seen this removed on a few cars and would like to no if there were any negative results on their cars.

it not only keeps down the sound, but also acts as a heat barrier, and in the case of an engine fire, and redartant blanket.

okay... my brother has the same stuff on his regal (98 gs) it was running kinda warm in the summer, so we tried something and took it off.... on avterage, his car was runninf 50 degrees cooler on hot days because the heat could escape better...

however, it made the hood VERY hot and it requred waxing twice as much as the rest of the car. Also, he put it back on, because when it was off he coudl hear every little bad noise that the engine made and he lives by out-of-sight-out-of-mind
