Starter problem after headswap

In a nutshell, here's the problem. The starter won't fully engage the flexplate after the headswap. We pulled the motor to do the swap and changed the converter to an 11 1/4 Marauder spec with the corresponding 6 bolt flexplate. Now it's all back together and when turning the key, the armature ejects and spins but does not engage the flexplate teeth. We even replaced the starter with a new one thinking it wasn't strong enough to work, but the new one does the same thing. Any ideas???

Yes. No issues with the motor being bound up. We can physically see the starter is just not engaging the flexplate but do not know why.

I was just gonna reply to that. Not only would it interfere with the motor, you couldn't bolt up the converter and the bolt holes wouldn't line up with the crank.

I cross referenced the part number on the flexplate and basically it is correct for any 6 bolt crank & 11.25" converter combination from 1999-2004. I suppose it is possible that the plate was stamped wrong.

Did the tranny bolt to the engine as easy as the last time you swapped? Maybe the TC is not fully seated?

Yes. The TC was installed properly. I've done a few of them now and I know how to slide it on the input shaft and turn, then slide and turn. The relationship between the TC and the bellhousing is the same as it was before. Also, there is a couple of threads showing on the converter studs with the nuts torqued down just like before.

Just to eliminate the possibility, I wold mark one tooth and then spin the engine by hand and count the teeth. Then compare it to the original.

I've come into this world with nothing and still manage to have some of it left.

Problem solved. When we bolted the bellhousing and the motor together, the last bolt on the top did not line up correctly. It was almost a half a bolt off! So, we decided the starter teeth and flexplate were not lining up correctly because the trans was rotated just slightly, and we were right. The starter armature was actually just barely interfering with the flexplate. So, we disconnected the motor and trans and started over making sure all the bolts lined up. Got the starter back in and she fired up on the third crank!
