replaced timing chains due to wear?

Has anyone had to replace the timing chains and/or tensioners in your 4.6? I'm curious to see what symptons anyone has experienced.

Im now running 140k on factory chains and gears with stage 2 cams(for 3 years now). Everything is still doing good.

2x95 cougars to the scapper

on one of the mustangs I did a PI swap on we had to replace the chains and guides, chains had a lot of play in them when they were off of the engine, and before we did the swap it was making a griding sound behind the timing cover, the guides were down to bare metal, so how one of the guide bolts was missing, probably what caused the excessive wear

mind stock npi at tear down at 196k miles only shows minimal wear on the chain guide.

My daily job is to fry rice for my customers....

My mechaninc says these timing chains are not supposed to ever need replacing unless some other part causes the failure. . . for example. . .if your guide rails fail.

Only need to replace the chains if the guides are worn to metal IMHO. I always replace the curved guide and always use the cast iron tensioners.

I had to replace the passenger side tensioner after doing the PI cam swap it did not pump up, had to take the hole thing apart again to....crap.....

Never heard of a set going bad... Unless as has been mentioned something else fails and causes it. I had to replace a set of heads on mine (long story) but still use the original tensioners, guides, and chains. they showed little if any wear.

278K on my crown vic, and the timing cover has never been off the motor.
