Has anyone really changed valve seals in the car?

What a PITA!!!. How do you get to the back ones on the passenger side? Such is the life of the owner of a car with a V 8 that was designed for a 6.

How many miles do you have on the car? If you have high mileage, you might want to stop now and do a headswap because you might be replacing the valve seals again in a few thousand miles. The 94/95 heads had valve guides that were too short, and the guide wears out and allows the valve to wobble a bit, which will very quickly wipe out the new seals.

MadMikeyL has plenty of experience with valve seals to say the least.

I've come into this world with nothing and still manage to have some of it left.

1994 Thunderbird, 4.6 V8, PI heads, SVO Blower, 8# pulley, 2.5 duel exhaust, 4R70W, MarkVIII converter, Mark VIII differential, Trac-Loc, 3.73 gears, H&R 1.5 lowering springs, bilstien rear shocks and SC front struts.

Yeah, I know. Naturally I find out after I've changed all but the last 2, that they are all but impossible to get to. She's got about 200,000, don't know exactly, had a couple odometers.

OK, I'm not going PI, and will reuse the POS aluminum manifold. What are my options for heads?

Get heads off a 96-98 tbird or mustang. The ones you want will have a casting number that begins with F5. For 96 they redesigned the heads, and among other changes, made the valve guides longer. These heads are much better about not wiping out valve seals. Also, since they are still NPI heads, your aluminum intake, valve covers, etc. will all bolt up with no problems.

just a heads up you might want to do a motor swap as more may be bad then just your valve seals at that mileage. My dads just went out at 185 thousand and we found that his oil pickup was clogged and their were minor other issues. This from a guy who changes his oil every 3000 miles religously. Might be worth saving your money and doing the swap so you got a complete fresh engine. Again just my two cents and having new heads with seals is better then leaking valve seals. As for getting to the back one.........yeah we said screw it and pulled the engine. good luck though.

IMHO - its about the same amount of work to change the seals in car as pulling the motor to remove the heads. I would do a head swap with 96-00 NPI heads with PI cams myself and rebuild the bottom end if needed.

im gonna be doing a pi swap in the next couple months, sorry they arent out yet or id get you the whole top half real cheap. everything from the heads to the air box is going

Shipping out to basic training for the army on april 12th!

Almost made it. On the last one, slip...plink...valve falls into cylinder. Guess the heads coming off after all.

Bro if you have to yank the heads I can send for $275 shipped a pair of 96+ NPI heads fully rebuilt with 3 angle valve job, reground stock valves, all guides checked (and bad ones replaced) new valve seals, and PI cams installed. Just move the rockers and lifters over from your stock heads and taking the old head castings to the metal yard will get you about $30 back.

At this point, I suggest you pull the heads off, and have a look at the cylinder bores. If they still have the cross-hatching, and no score marks in them, and there isn't much of a ridge at the top of the bore, then grab the heads from nickmckinney and bolt them on with new gaskets and head bolts, and drive it for another 200K. If, once the heads are off, you find that the cylinder bore isn't in good shape, then put a whole engine in it. All it costs to pull the heads off is time, and this way you aren't committing to spending anything until you know exactly what you are looking at. Good luck.

BTW - I routinely see these 4.6 make 4-500,000 miles in taxi cab service with zero bore wear, and the first 50-100K is regular street use as they only buy stock 2nd hand cars around here to convert. If your bores are good then use diesel oil only (higher additive levels) and drive it until its ready for the junkyard.

Yeah, I'm at 280K on my crown vic, and the valve covers have never been off it. What's really surprising is that it still has the original trans in it.
