Plastic Intake Tube Project (Gauging Interest)

RobertP and i (mostly robert though!) are working on a small intake tube project. If many of you are strong followers of the modular mustang family then you may know that JLT is HIGHLY favored as the best intake tubes for these modular 4.6's. JLT uses a plastic tube which is MUCH cooler in temperature than the metal tubes that many other intake tube companies use (MAC, BBK, etc.). Robert is hoping to use actual JLT couplers and hose clamps to mimic the JLT as much as possible. I haven't discussed with robert yet, but i was thinking to use a AEM "dryflow" filter with this set up. The dryflow is a reuseable filter, much the same as K&N but does NOT use filter oil. Therefore, it should reduce the MAF sensor fouling problems that many encounter when using an oiled aftermarket filter. I have used this actual filter on some of my own cars and have had great success with it. Cleaning is easy and there is NO oil to foul up your sensors.

The material will be plastic and will be a 4 inch diameter, and we are hoping to use the same EXACT couplers that JLT is using. Finishes have not been finalized yet, but they will most likely be painted with automotive paint. We were thinking that black or silver would be most popular but please leave your input on color schemes... There has even been talk of flame paint scheme set ups as well (again just like what JLT offers). This is going to be a short ram intake as well. There has not been any discussion about offering a cold air version, but i suppose that anything could be done if there is alot of interest...

Summary:
PVC material used for the tube
JLT Couplers+Hose Clamps hopefully
Painted Finish similar to JLT
For the 96-97 Throttle Body Set ups

Just trying to gauge interest here and looking to see if anyone would be interested in something like this... Thank you everyone!

Just as a side note the kit will fit a 94-95 4.6 with the 96-97 throttle body setup, but I know the 94-95 cars need some bracing removed from under the hood, so this kit should clear your 96 97 with ease

Hmm. Interesting doesn't look like alot of interest here. We will have to see though. I'm waiting for Robert to respond to my PM, after that i'll send him some cash and we can finalize this project.

I thought for sure there would be interest here, knowing that there are no bolt on kits available for these cars besides the SCP (metal) and the K&N which we all know is a steaming pile of doo doo.

Update: Currently we are trying to make this set up work with a STOCK tbird MAF. That way you will be able to run this with your stock MAF and not need to switch to a mustang/lightning set up and therefore having to get a tune. Again, we will both update this post as much as we can throughout the next coming weeks... Hopefully there will be more interest and we can release pricing and color options. Like i've said before RobertP is just trying to create more options for our MN12's. Although pricing has not been released, be assured that the price will be fair for the seller and the buyer. Again any comments or criticism is welcome. Thanks again everyone!

To be honest the biggest reason for doing this project is to avoid using metal. A metal short ram or cold air could be EASILY fabricated in a matter of hours. However, i feel that the metal tubes just don't cut it. If it means anything, the mustang 4.6 community feels the same way. Thus why we see such a HUGE following for the JLT and K&N plastic intake tubes. The JLT is actually one of the only companies that seem to improve the power of these engines. Now i'm not here to bash SCP or any other metal intake tube company, but i'm simply stating that we are using plastic for a reason. A plastic tube is more involved than a metal tube. Any exhaust or muffler shop can bend you up an intake tube in a couple of minutes...

I feel very strongly about using the plastic. In my honest opinion the plastic tubes are worth the extra cost over a simple aluminum tube. Why spend money on something that will only make your air charge temperatures hotter? Following the heat kills power factoid, this wouldn't be a good decision...

I should be recieving the finalized tube design from robert sometime in the next coming weeks, and i will post pictures of the set up. I will also paint the tube. Possibly black or silver (figured this would be most popular) and i may do one in a flame design. Again much like what JLT does with their intake tube systems. Please any questions feel free to post or PM myself or robertP. Thank you everyone!

well so far a short ram and I've got a heatsheild on my car and its sealed up pretty good so it only gets fender air anyway, the reason I like the short ram intake is from the 2 pipes of tested, it has not leaned the car, not sure if a fenderwell kit would change the maf transfer function or not, I will get this tube drilled and the fittings installed and I've gotta get a gromment for the intake air temp! The tube has been primed just for pictures hopefully I'll have the rest of the couplings by the end of the week so if you are interested in a tube PM me.

I have a few books on electronic fuel injection and performance tuning for the modular 4.6/5.4. Every book that i have states that you shouldn't put a sharp bend before the MAF. Doing so could cause excess turbulance and can have negative effects on how the MAF sensor reads. I know that there are many companies out there, including JLT that have sharp bends before the MAF, and it seems that everything is okay but in my honest opinion roberts design is ideal. Not only that, as robert stated earlier, a heat shield can be made to help block the heat. Lastly having the filter down in the bumper can make it difficult to check the condition of the filter. Think about it, if the filter fell off the tube you wouldn't even know unless you took off the inner shield.

Here is an updated picture of roberts work. Again this is not the finished product, just a progress picture.

Lol. If it was up to me then i would be all for that. But this is more roberts project and he is the one doing the real work here. I am merely doing test fitting and the paint finish since i do body work for a living. You are welcome to check out my tube (the one pictured above). I still have to send robert the money order, but that will get sent out tomorrow and hopefully it will get to me within 2 weeks.Like i said before, i will not speak on an exact price, because that is to be determined by robert. Just realize that whatever price robert decides on, will be a fair price for the buyer and the seller. Thanks again everyone.

would there be a chance of a pic of the finished product in a car all hooked up including the iac hose and the drivers side breather hose??

one thing i am curious about is how do you guys plan on making a mounting point for this for some of the guys that are using open element filters?

To add what robert has said. I will be posting pictures of the tube installed and with a gloss painted finish. The tube pictured above isn't tapped for the IAC hose and valve cover breather hose. There WILL be posted pictures of the finished set up on my car, which is a 96 4.6 liter. Thanks again everyone!

Pictured above is the finished tube itself. The finish that you see there is obviously dull, and is not the finish that will be provided on the other intake tubes. I requested that the tube be unfinished because i am going to paint this myself, either body colored or possibly a candy flame job. Again this is what the tubes will look like just in a different finish.*Robert mentioned in a PM that the going price was going to be $145 shipped. Included is the couplers to the throttle body, adapters for 80mm and 90mm MAF, and of course the tube with the necessary fittings. You will need to provide your own air filter. I recommend the AEM dryflow just because it's an open element filter that does not need oiling. Therefore prevents the fouling of the MAF sampling tubes. Obviously the K&N is easiest to obtain as it is available at almost any auto parts stores.... Thanks again everybody!

95xbird I make one to fit either car since the pipe is so big and the throttle body is slightly different from the SVO setup to the stock setup and on my car I as .5-.75 psi of boost more over the GT tube, the throttle response is greatly improved on 2 cars tested, as far as power gains ricky car picked up 3-5 rwhp over his gt tube with 80mm maf and cone filter only thing changed was the tube, so over a stock setup I'm guessing around 10rwhp over a stock setup, also ricky test would have been better if he had a 90mm maf cause it matches the intake tube perfect
