Speed-sensitive steering

Dont beat me up too bad but i was wondering if the thunderbirds with the 4.6 ever had the speed controlled steering. If so does anyone have any pics showing the sensor. Im tryin to figure out how to keep that feature functional on my SC once i put my cobra motor in. The SC EVO will not fit on the 4.6 pump. Totally different design.

The sensor is on the steering column, It's the same between the SC and LX.

Are you asking about the SENSOR, or the EVO valve?

I'm not sure if the actuator is the same but they're extremely common as all 4.6 MN12/FN10s had EVO standard.

FWIW I'm using a 90 SC arc module with my stock V8 EVO actuator, so interface is the same as well.

My Tbird is the first car I ever drove that had speed sensitive steering. I was very impressed.

I think it's one of the better features of the Tbird.

It is.

Other cars, later, made it standard (my 2000 Malibu for one).

It's REALLY nice on the highway - the wheel has enough effort required you don't feel like it's floating on glass, unlike the Dakota which a) requires a bit of effort when not rolling and b) feels like you could sneeze and drive it lock to lock from the wind while moving at 75MPH.

Here's a pic of the location of the EVO Actuator on the 4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar..

AFAIK you can use these 4.6L steering components to retain the EVO variable assist on your 94-95 SC..

4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar Power Steering Pump(Includes EVO Actuator)

4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar Power Steering Return Hose

4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar Power Steering High Pressure Line

You may have to extend the wires on the EVO Actuator harness since you're swapping engines..

Or just use a doner 4.6 engine harness.

You can even unwrap the loom and get those wires completely out and separate from the main engine harness since the EVO circuits come out of an in-line connector from the driver side frame rail and go directly to the actuator. It(as well as the alternator wiring) are really only integrated with the main engine harness for convenience.

thanks guys this is what i needed. looks like i may have to use a 4.6 bird pump because my cobra pump does not have the orifice for the EVO. thanks again for the pic.

If you move the wheel suddenly about 4", it will turn off.

DON'T do this on purpose at speed unless you really know what you're doing; it goes to full assist almost instantly.

This really helps out to control a slide, or during other emergency conditions.

It won't turn back on for awhile, or possibly even until you cycle the key.

Use Caution!

Yep ..... and I was so pleased in 2009 that it did so. It was a nice summer day and wife and I took my then still "near new to us" '95 to near Williamsburg, Va. and Pearce's BBQ (It's a good long trip, near 160 miles one way to Pearce's, but I usually get a $80-$100 BBQ loaded up in coolers under blown in ice, lasts us a long time) , then to Doumar's Drive In (featured on DD&D .... Doumar Bros. invented the Waffle Cone in 1904 at the St Louis Exposition and descendants still make the cones on the same gas fired waffle irons) in Norfolk to find it closed (Sunday?) and so we came back via Rt 460 through Wakefield and had a wonderful supper at The Virginia Diner (opened about 1929 and also featured on DD&D) and I fell in love with their Carrot Souffle (it is some "killer" stuff!) with my Baked Ham and Chicken Dinner.

We live in the lower Shenandoah Valley so we had a long drive home yet and near Crew, Va. there on a slight hill crest of 4 lane US 460 near the entrance to an old motel well past dark and I had eased past a slower car and was maybe a couple hundred feet ahead of it still in the left lane when suddenly headlights came on directly in front of me in the left lane.

I immediately whipped right and then left to correct (a benefit of those years of training) and avoided a head on with a slow moving white car pointed east in the west bound left lane .... glad he turned the lights on. I called dispatch for that division and luck had a Trooper on duty near by. I got a return call from the Trooper later (I was still on the force then), he found the car and driver a short ways from that crest still on the wrong side .... it was an old drunk (who thought he was on his side of a two lane roadway I guess).

I was impressed with how well the Bird handled the immediate and very severe sudden lane change at 60 mph.

I've never understood how people can get on the freeway the wrong way; good thing they caught him before he killed someone.

We have a lot of deer here; I've crested many a hill around here after dark, and see Bambi standing in the road.

I've wiped the road dirt off my Cougar with a deer; it's amazing to look at your car, and see a clean spot where you "just missed"...

That's how I noticed the steering; I thought I broke it, lol.

Stupidity and not looking.

I was getting off I-49 at Natchitoches, LA exit, and as I hit the ramp (at about 80MPH - speed limit is 75), a guy in a older late-60's Caddy pulled onto the exit ramp. From LA6, the cross highway. Going the wrong way.

Oh, I had the whole ramp to do the "Oh *PROFANITY*!!!" and discover that yes, PBRs WILL haul a 1991 Cougar down VERY well.

The driver did a U-turn on the ramp, and headed back off.

I have NO idea what s/he was thinking of ...

Pump differences

Here are some images of the pump on my cobra motor. It looks the same as the one in the image that is in this thread. The only difference i can see is where the high pressure line feeds the pump. It looks like i could get an EVO sensor and switch the input for the HP line and put the EVO into the hole in the back of the pump. Let me know what you guys think. Hopefully the pros will chime in on this with some advice.

It looks like it should work fine, but you still need to use these parts:

You can use these MN12 4.6L steering components to retain the EVO variable assist on your 94-95 SC..

1:4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar Power Steering Return Hose

2:4.6L Thunderbird/Cougar Power Steering High Pressure Line

3:EVO Actuator (94-97 4.6L MN12)

The EVO Actuator has been obsolete for awhile, but if you want a "new" one..Jason can probably help you out-->>FordPartsCounter

The Ford Part Number for the EVO Actuator on the 94-97 4.6L MN12s is: F3LY-3783-A or (F3LY3783A)

You may have to extend the wires on the EVO Actuator harness since you're swapping engines..

I had a harness from a 95 bird that I removed the alternator and EVO harness from and modified it, they are wired to the same harness, so hopefully it will work. I will get ahold of him and see if he can get one. Thank you

Has anyone actually removed one of these sensors from a pump ? I have done many SC pumps but not many 4.6. I'm guessin its just unscrew and screw back in ? Any springs or seals to watch for ? Other than the teflon rings ?

its an allan key if memory serves. and it will most likely do what mine did, and just remove the cap and Oring that holds the outer solenoid on.

then your left with the rest of the valve with no way of removing it besides a set of pliers, or a hammer and chisel around the bottom edge.... once you get the valve off it has a needle inside that the solenoid pulls in and out to change the pressure leaving the pump.

RUST!! eating away at me more than the rear fender wells
