smoking issue 95 4.6

when the weather is a bit warmer and the car is atleast somewhat warmed up it happens. if I sit stopped for longer than a minute or so in drive and then start accelerating it'll puff a bit of what looks like white smoke. Any ideas what might cause this. it doesn't smoke at start up or any other time.

Valve seals are shot, which makes you burn oil. 94-95 are notorious for it. I think a member here has used motor honey and that has almost stopped the oil burning.

I love my V8, but I'd love it more if all 8 cylinders worked. (they do now)

is there any down side to using motor honey? it looks soo thick like it wouldn't be good for other parts

Yes, it can gel, and it is thick, therefore it increases the possibility of scoring the cam journals, however it's usually a moot point for anything you'll use it on. Example 93-95 4.6 boat anchors.

Other tricks to slow or reduce the smoke would be thicker, and synthetic oil. Also I've never bought into the whole 5w20 recall that ford retrodated to ALL 4.6's (they mandated a fluid specification switch from 5w30/10w30 to 5w20) living in 115+ climate with the parts used on my 4.6 builds 5w30/0w40/5w40 is all I use.

Depending on your mileage and climate I'd consider a (x)w40 or (x)w50 synthetic or synthetic blend of course the best solution would be a newer engine swap PI, 4v, Etc... The cheap best repair would be to "just" change the valve stem seals. I say "just" because doing it in car can be a pain. Good luck.

In 2009 I bought my third T-bird, a '95 LX 4.6 with 51K miles on it and a steady appetite for oil and I noticed a little puff of smoke after leaving stop lights. I was adding a quart of oil every few hundred miles. I bought the tool to change valve seals, my motor is young.

But before I changed seals, I decided to try something "just as a temporary delaying tactic. I changed oil (oil that was in it looked normal dark, not overly thick and car had good records for maintenance) ...
... and I started using Bardahl's No Smoke+Stop Leak. Within a few thousand miles, before my next change, the motor had drastically reduced it's appetite for oil. I use 5W30 oil in the '95 4.6 along with MC filters every 4 - 5K miles.

I use one 16oz bottle of "Bardahl's No Smoke+Stop Leak" with the seal saver additive each oil change, it is a little thick in the bottle, but you must keep in mind that you're adding it to 5 quarts of oil. No Smoke+Stop Leak is claimed to contain seal swell agents and seal conditioners to restore pliability and body to seals that are starting to dry, shrink and become brittle.

I don't know that it's the Bardahl's that helped with the usage or just my choice of oil or what .... but now I add a quart maybe every 1000-1200 miles between changes. I have not yet changed those stem seals, she runs great, there are no smoke puffs leaving stop lights (I have even had opportunities to ask wife unit following me to and from paint shop and such .... I had hood and roof repainted .... or those times when my flex hours at my job matched her hours and she followed me in to work).

"Snake oil"?

Car has 84K miles now, I will someday do those seals .... maybe this summer. But for whatever reason, the smoke and oil use slowed after I started using the Bardahl's.

I'm the one that has put a bunch of that Motor Honey in my 1995.

Yes, it worked great.

Just a thought - make sure you use it & drive awhile, not just a 5-10 minute trip where the engine doesn't get a chance to warm up.
Reason being it doesn't just wind up sludged up on the head where you poured it in since it has a chance to get hot and mix in the oil good.

Anything thick I pour in slowly, when the engine is hot and running.

I use tranny fluid for the same thing; 1/2 cup in each oil change.
