P0320: 96 Tbird 4.6

P0320 <> Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit

The car had been very hard to start for a few days and when started it would struggle to run. At times it would run smooth for a short while then the tac would drop to 0. Sometimes it would stall when that happened other times to would jump back to normal.

After cleaning the MAF and checking some vacum lines I managed to get it running for a while the other day and while trying to hold it at a constant 2500 rpms I saw it drop to 0 twice in a period of about 30-45 seconds. Other than those two times it seemed to run normally. It had did this once while driving a couple of months back but only the one time until now.

My scanner showed a pending code of P0320 after this session.

It seemed to be running better after the little work I did so I decided to drive it to the nearby store. On that trip it dropped to 0 3 times but did not stall. The next day I could not get it to start. It would try but sounded like it might be flooding itself out. After a couple of tries I also noticed that it seemed to be kicking back at times when it was firing like maybe the timing was advanced to far.

I would really like to figure out what is going on with this car and get it going but I really do not know what to try at this point other than having it towed to the dealer which I would like to avoid if possible.

Any suggestions?

P0320 is a crank sensor code. No signal from the crank sensor means no running. The fact that it is intermittent means it is most likely either a loose connection or a wiring issue somewhere. Start by tracing the wiring harness back from the crank sensor, which is on the lower right front of the engine, near the AC compressor.

Thanks,

I'll have a close look at the wiring and connections and see if I can find an issue.
I read that a faulty coil pack or even plug wire could cause such an issue by interfering with the signal from the CSS.

Does it make sense that one of these could also cause such an issue?

No. A crank sensor code is something to do with the crank sensor, the wiring for it, or in rare cases, the ecm.

Ok, good to know. I thought it sounded a bit strange but had to ask.
I will get under the car and have a look as soon as it stops raining.
