Subtle Problems...

Well I am not quite sure if something is wrong or if it is all in my mind...

My exhaust has a fairly rich smell, it smells like I've got unburnt fuel coming out. The passenger side also has a different sound to it, since I have true duals now I know that that sound is thus coming from the passenger side bank. There is an audible pulse that is coming from that side that sounds like it shouldn't be there.

For starters, the hose coming from the top exit on the PCV is cracked all to hell, needs to be replaced. The second port on the PCV has nothing attached to it, and I'm not sure why. Plugs are 22Cs that were just installed two weeks ago, gapped to .060. New Motorcraft plug wires as well, also two weeks old. I don't believe the symptoms are a new condition necessarily, i.e. since the new plugs/wires.

My first thought was a bad injector or EEC, but I'm not pouring fuel out of the tailpipes. Regardless, I'm going to test with a noid light today and see where that gets me.

Palm,

Greetings. I too am having the same same symptoms. I am catless so I think this might be a cause. Are you running cats?

B,

I was also looking at your signature, is that time and speed correct? You ran a 15.6 @ 90. What happened? Bad track or was that before the engine swap?

I have the two cats coming off the manifolds but no third cat.

That time is correct, and was post-engine swap, but was made on stock exhaust and 3.08 open rear. I'm going back to the track when I can get this situation figured out. The track wasn't horrible, Aaron K. ran a 14.3 I believe, The Great Obucina was running 15.1s all night. I think I'll see a nice improvement with practice and proper tires.

Can someone confirm for me where the bottom of the two ports on the PCV valve is supposed to lead? I'm guessing it should go to the upper intake, I have a port blocked off by the IAC intake that I'm thinking it should lead to...

15.6 with 3.08's. That ain't shabby. Drop in some 3.73's and you will fly. Keep it up and lets us know when you hit them 14's. I am looking for them as soon as a can a find a near by track here in DC.

Only the large port of the PCV is used on my '97. The origional valve only had one large port, but the replacement had one large and a small port that was plugged. Are your unused PCV ports plugged? Check your vacuum lines as well, I just replace two rotted ones last weekend, still have to replace a few more. Also replace the PCV hose, if it's cracked, its leaking. Any whistling noises coming form your motor that could be an open vacuum line?

I just checked our '96 and the larger hole does indeed go to the intake plenum. I have the tube for that lying around somewhere I just need to find it. New PCV valve as well, only $4, going in in a few minutes. Just need to get the flexible rubber hose that connects the PCV to the line going to the canister now, and we'll see where I end up at.

Yeah if I could place a time frame on the problem I first noticed it around the time I became SCT Tuned...

Something doesn't seem quite right in my MD tune, so L is going to take care of me.

did they bump the timing at all? the one thing that comes to mind would be the valves having too long of an open duration. make sure that all the valves are opening and closing all the way. if they are than the only other thing i can think of is that on the exhaust stroke our intake valve somewhere is opening too early and it is venting unburn fuel through you exhaust valve (if that was the problem than you might have noticed a small loss in power) hope this helps you out.

Yes, the chip advances the ignition timing.

The only way that I have improper valve operation would be if there was in fact damage done at the track on April 30th. The engine saw 6500 RPMs once, not intentionally, but I suppose it is still possible that there was valvetrain damage done at that point. I do not believe this is the case though.

We'll see how things turn out after the car gets retuned by someone I trust and he gets behind the wheel and checks things out himself.

I hope to get the separator plate that Tim gave me installed first thing next week, so as of this point I will be planning on going up the following Monday.

I'll keep you posted after I get my schedule sorted out and talk to the man to see what his looks like.

Nope I'm back home for the summer in PC...otherwise you would have been getting phone calls to hang out/have a BBQ or something lol

I could probably back it up a couple of days or hold off until the next week or so, of course depending on the other party. I've got a Ford meeting in Orlando on the 26th-27th but won't be able to shoot up to OP then.

6500 should be fine on a pi motor, id get worried at 6900 and above, id work out your PCV issue and then see if the exhaust smells funky on one side still, you seem like you have very well planed out healthy mods, what made you opt for 3.27s vs something else?

I know that some people say that they get decent highway mileage with 3.73s, but I spend quite a bit of time on the highway and I'm really not planning to go all out with this car. Right now I'm working on some appearance issues (new headlights, painted grill, etc), and my SVO fund is getting larger by the paycheck. After the SVO blower I plan to build up the suspension but that is it, or so I say now
