I have not changed the filter arrangement but plan on removing the violin case for cold air induction tubing. I have made a custom ram air system that takes air directly from the front bottom right up to the airbox. I have kept the airbox simply for the reason of collecting bugs and any water. Now let me say that I do not drive the Bird in extremely bad weather and so a water problem has not happened yet. The ram air seems to work and the key is to eliminate 90 degree bends for smoother curves and to collect as much cold dense air as possible. I have no documentation as to any improvement in performance and it may all be in my head so take it for what it is worth and good luck in your decision.

You can hook up Just about any filter you want, as long as it's before the MAF. If you do though, you will be sucking hot air in from the engine compartment unless you buy/build a heat shield. Do a search on heat shield and you will get some sellers and pics of them installed.

If you are completely stock, check out the air silencer removal article in the tech articles. That will raise the intake to the bottom of the stock airbox.

Otherwise, stay out of deep water.

Hope this helps,
