56K WARNING Help with diagnosing discoloration of heads

I am in the middle of doing a head swap an I pulled my valve covers off to discover that the passenger side (right bank) is a golden brown color. My left bank is pristeen and shows no sign of oil burn what so ever. The motor has 76,000 miles on it and has never been touch internally. Here are some pics for reference.

This problem even extends down to the timing chain tensioners as you can see here



In the last pic you can see the two sides side by side comparison.


If anyone has some advice please let me know.

Ive heard a few arguements over what causes that...

-often the kind of oil you use and milage on the engine come into play.

*-because of the PCV valve being above that head you are more likely to see deposits there.

-another could be that side is running hot....when you pull the heads off look to see if there is any kind of discoloration inside the combustion chamber. Although unlikely and Im fairly sure you would have had other signs indicating a problem there (fouled plugs and detonation)

More than likely the second or a combination of the first two.

I remember some of the guys on the markviii forum noticing this about the DOHC engine too. Seems odd.......

My thoughts were that maybe that side was running hot. I will post some pics of the plugs from both sides. I am definately going to check the cylinder walls in case of heat damage. Its weird that one side is pristeen though and not the other.....is this damagin as long as the motor is not hot?

Nope shouldnt be a problem. Breath in and out, I think your going to be just fine.

You might want to to consider trying http://www.auto-rx.com/index.html Ive never personally tried it in one of my engines so I hesitate to fully recommend it but from what Ive read and seen first hand it works well. Would probably help clean up alot of deposits you arnt seeing.

cool thanks for the info.....the only reason I worry is because at my freinds shop he just did a head swap (passenger side only) on a 4.6 because the valve was stuck open and other than the oil sludge the discoloration was very similar to mine. I figure that as long as it is not overheating then with the new heads everything should be fine. I'll know more once I look at the cylinder walls.

Other opinions still welcome.

Mine looked the same way when i did my PI cam swap at about 80,000, AFTER an Auto-RX treatment. In my opinion i don't believe its because its running hotter because the coolant mod is for the other head, so technically it should be running cooler than the drivers head. But i have no idea why or what could cause it...

Well its hard to say, cause i didn't look before i used it, but that burnt looking color doesn't really come off all that easy, even if you scratched it. So the auto-rx could have worked but just left the color behind on the metal. In my opinion it didn't seem to hurt anything but i really can't say cause i didn't look at the insides till after it was used, for all i know it could of made it worse, or much better.

oh yah, what motor oil do you use, and what are your change intervals it seems that your engine is just a bit cleaner and i was just wondering.

I use whatever jiffylube uses in their oil changes. I think it's quakerstate.....to be honest theres so much drama out there when it comes to engine oil i just change mine every two months no matter what or 1500-1700 miles. I will probably soon start using a higher end motor oil do to the fact that the motor is getting up there on mileage and will be under a lot more stress once the head swap and intake swap is done. Right now I'm running at 299 rwhp on my 12.83 sec passes in the 1/4

I'm with AEDM8 on the why's. It's more than likely something to do with the PCV being on that head. I've used Mobil 1 synthetic since I've had the car (almost 3 years now) and it still looked like that. I haven't noticed any ill effects from the varnish/staining or what have you. If there /was/ something wrong with that bank of cylinders, I'm almost positive the computer would have caught it or there would be some other sign.

Clogged PCV valve or pathway? The vapors are not being drawn into the motor, the other side is wide open path to the intake, keeps vapor from collecting and condensing on the hardware.

I think it's because when you add oil it's on the driver' side. every 3k or so it get a washing over of virgin oil.

Then the Windsor heads should be the opposite. Anyone with a Windsor engine have a discolored driver's side bank and a clean passenger side?
