I am getting my T-Bird this weekend!

Well, this is my first post, so let me introduce myself.

My name is Trevor Cole and I am the owner/administrator of the New Edge Cougar Owners Forums. http://www.fastcougar.com/forums/ I love my 99 Cougar, but had to sell it roughly a year ago to increase savings for a down payment on a house that I bought in late February of this year. When I sold the Cougar, I bought a POS Escort to just get me around. It has served me well, but will soon be donated to the American Heart Associated. The American Cancer Society actually rejected the car as a donation stating:

"Thank you for considering the American Cancer Society for the donation of
your vehicle. Based on the current status of the wholesale market for used
vehicles, we have been forced to set a criteria for vehicles we accept to
avoid incurring expenses that are greater than the income generated from
the sale of the vehicle.

Unfortunately, based on that criteria we are unable to accept your
donation. We regret this situation and hope that we can be of service to
you in the future."

Regardless, I have had the Escort for 14 months now and it has served me well, but is starting to fall apart. My wife was recently laid off (worked at WorldCom) and since then, my parents have been more than willing to help us out. They want to make sure that we don't have to spend any money foolishly and they thought that fixing the Escort was a waste of money (needs new clutch, plugs, wires, ignition, etc.) and I concur. So, they offered to give me their 96 T-Bird since my mother will have her father's 96 Grand Marque when she moves him out to live closeby in the coming months.

So, being VERY tight on money, what are some "free" modifications that I can do to increase HP/TQ.

Cool Beans

Remove air silencer.

I like my coffee black, like I like my metal.

Talking As far as "free" mods go...

unfotunately there aren't many....

The most famous one that's free is removal of the air
silencer. You'll find a writup in the Tech Articles section.
Make sure your paper panel filter is clean...

I'm sure others will come up with a few more...

Good Luck,

Hey and welcome. If I were you, I would do something to your exhaust. Here are some options: cut the muffler(s) off, cut 2rd cat off, replace with a piece of pipe, or possibly pit a glasspack in place of the third cat. All you would nedd is something to cut the exhaust, and depending what you would chose, a piece of pipe - cheap (maybe 5-10 bucks most), or that glasspack - $20. Juust some options. For my 96' Taurus 3.0 I cut off my resonator and added a glasspack. Costed $25 for the glasspack and the clamps.
