tapping crank question.

hey guys

as some may know.. i busted an ARP bolt in my crank.. finally got it extracted a while back, and managed to drill what appears to be all of the broken bolt and damaged threads out

attempted to tap the crank a little larger (14mm as opposed to 12 or 12.5 (whatever)) but maintained same 1.5mm pitch

i am only able to tap it say... half the distance from the fingertip to the first knuckle.. so maybe 6-8 threads / 1/2"

how much thread is necessary to "hold" the stock pulley on the crank. we all know it has to be pulled on, but there isn't enough thread available to use the traditional method, so i can tap it on w/ a hammer if necessary, but what about holding it on, or whatever the bolts purpose is?

i cannot tap any further because as i turn the tap, the crank starts to turn.. i don't want to have someone hold the flywheel, because to be honest, i've broken enough things on this install

jd

A good guide is the diameter of the bolt. i.e. 14mm bolt, 14mm worth of threads.

take the inspection plate off the bellhousing and jamb something (like a block of wood) between the flexplate teeth and the bellhousing to hold it.

i think you are missing the point....he wants to keep the pulley on, not keep the motor from rotating to take it off. he wants to know how deep the threads need to be to achieve that goal.

i don't need a block of wood, i have a flywheel/flexplate turner that is quite adept at holding it steady... with my luck, forcing sh!t is what has caused this problem.. hence me having to do this to begin with
