Service engine soon

Hey guys, i got a 30th anniversary XR7 (4.6) 3 months ago, and ever since, the service engine soon light has been coming on and off. Since i did some stereo stuff to the car liek every once in a while, i'd disconnect the battery. When I'd reconnect everything back up, the light on the dash would be gone and the car would run normally but with the light off. I never noticed the car running differently, there was just one time that the thing was knocking pretty bad and the service engine soon light came on so i pulled over, disconnected the battery put it back together. And the car was running normal again and the ligth came off. Now (about a month since the last incident) the light came back on. Ive also noticed that my car is idling kinda low in neutral the car feels and sounds fine but when stopepd and in drive (at a red light) the car starts to shake,it stays right at the line right before 0 rpm's. Its probably at around 450 rpm's there. Any ideas or suggestions on what this problem could be? It just dosent feel like normal when stopepd at a red light is this normal?

none of that matters since you dont have a code for us. Get the car scanned, autozone does it for free.

One of the first things that I do with these motors after buying it is a general tune-up. . . .replace spark plugs, oil, oil filter and spark plug wires. Just because I like to know what is in the car and when it was put there.

This may not fix your problem. Just my thoughts. . . . .

Currently In the Short Bus Garage:
2 - '94 T-bird LX's 4.6L (one with 300,000+ miles and one with 200,000+ miles)
1 - '97 Mark VIII LSC - INTECH V8 (120,000+ miles)
1 - '97 F150 XLT 4x4 Flareside, 4.6L (130,000+ miles) - Currently being dismantled and rebuilt with upgrades!
1 - '00 Mustang GT (likes to accelerate with the brake on!), 4.6L (60,000+ miles - only comes out when I need to get somewhere fast.)

oh yeah, and they all have 4R70W's

O.k......The reason your "Check Engine" light went off after you disconnected the battery is because doing that resets the cars computer.....including all diagnostic trouble codes. The light comes back on when the computer "catches up" on what's wrong. It'll keep coming back on 'till the problem is fixed. Get the codes checked and get back to us....

Garage
If you can pop it to the floor, and drive it hard,

and never get a code, it's probably a sticking injector.

My black one does this, the red one has started doing it occasionally, and both sometimes give me trouble with the Idle air control solenoid.

Driving it hard takes care of it...of course that may be hard on you license...

Off topic: Is there a way, besides going to the dealer, to find out which injector is sticking?

Passed my buddy in my Black Cougar yesterday, (he has a mustang GT) at about 80, both back tires smoking, as it shifted into third...Man, I love these cars...

He told me today he's selling his 'stang...

(No, I was not on a public road, if you were wondering...)

Driving it hard usually isn't a big deal, as long as you arent' feeling any misfires or are running into any pre-ignition or anything like that. Most of the time when those lights come on, they are for sensors gone bad or emissions control stuff, so it's really hard to say what is happening without some diagnostic trouble codes from the system.

Good luck with the scan tomorrow!

alright, just got back form the garage, and it came up with 4 codes
1- was something about the car reaching redline
2 and 3 were both something to do with oxygen sensors
and 4 was about the purge valve something ...

he erased the codes for now and i gotta go back when the light comes on again so they can know for sure what the car needs, sorry i didnt catch the code #'s i was just listening to him explain. He was using some snap on diagnostics tool.

2-3 Try cleaning tha MAF sensor it's easy if you have the bit and eletrical cleaner .
http://tccoa.com/articles/intake/index.html# Go to cleaning MAF wires .

If that doesnt work for you then replace o2 sensors

4 try and look for broken or disconnected vacume lines >
Purge valve or near by parts are most likely your problem here .

I got the idiot light too, and I noticed that the car would seem to "miss" under normal acceleration, especially between 60-70mph. However, I had to disconnect the battery to mess with my sub and when I put it back on, the light was gone (computer cleared). I've driven the car about 100 miles or so since then and the light hasn't come on but that miss still sometimes shows up. So I probably wouldn't be able to get any codes out of that if there's no light, right?

Also, this may or may not be related, but during normal acceleration, the car seems to, for lack of a better word, chug from 30-40 mph.

I've cleaned the MAF, changed the fuel filter, air filter, oil, and I Sea Foamed the gas, oil, and vacuum lines.

Sorry to hijack this, but it seems like you are having similar problems, so I figured this was better than starting a new thread.

Thanks,

~Chuck
