NPI vs PI. What is the difference? Need to swap engine in my 97 Sport.

I have a 97 Sport with a blown 4.6L (bad rod knock).
I want to swap in another engine but heard there are many variables. That plus the PI vs NPI thing.
First a dumb question. Is my engine a NPI?
What cars and years engines would be a DIRECT SWAP. I mean every connector, every sensor etc. Am I limited to a 97 Tbird/Cougar only? What about a 97 Lincoln Town Car?
Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.
Also. I live in south east Michigan. Where can I go to get an engine?

most around here swap in an explorer engine because it is lighter and its PI. not sure if all the connectores etc are the same. im sure those that have done the swap will chime in. in the meantime search is your friend.

Town car is not a direct swap. Aside from a Bird/Cougar engine, I think you won't find any engine that is a direct swap, but there are many, such as the Explorer, that aren't too complicated and are well worth the effort in terms of power.

A lot of us got engines from junkyards, through www.greenleafauto.com or www.car-part.com.

If you are using only the long block then a Town Car would be a direct swap.

Thanks for the info

I'm looking for as simple of a swap as possible. I really don't want to have to start swapping sensors, wiring harnesses, intakes, exhaust manifolds etc. All of that means broken rusty bolts and more grief and money.
I plan to sell the car and hope to make a few bucks doing it. I want reliabilty not more power.
My car is great except for the engine. It has a Blue Oval switch chip, a great trans, cold A/C , 4 wheel anti-lock discs, leather, etc. It will make a good car for someone once the engine is swapped out.
I tried selling it as is without parting it out. I get talkers. They get me to agree on $1500 then say they don't have the money . Why the frick would someone shop for a car without having the money. I can see tire kickers and expect them, but why talk price? It is advertised at $2000, they offer $1500 (3 people so far) then don't follow through. Why talk someone down if they aren't buying it? Just to see how low someone will go?
As you can tell I'm getting PO'd. Sorry for the rant.
I'll keep looking for a direct engine swap.
Cheers.
Dan

Smile newer towncar PI?

Hi guys

would a 99 or newer towncar have a PI 4.6L in it? I know where a newer style one is at the wreckers and the complete 4.6L is in it still as well as the trans, if this towncar has the PI heads and intake can I use both, or will only the heads work and not the intake? what sort of HP and TQ increase will I see from the swap into my 94 Thunderbird?

thanks for the info

The Town Car wasn't changed over to PI until 01 or so.

The exhaust manifolds are not the same, specifically on the driver's side where the steering shaft is different. The poster said he didn't even want to swap manifolds.
