Forged 4.6L Rods

Have the price of forged rods for the 4.6L really dropped in price?

I hadn't checked them for a few years, but IIRC, they were running in the ball park of $400. Now it looks like forged rods are available for around $250?

Or are there now just different "levels" of forged rods as compared to a few years ago?

Or am I just getting senile in my old age?

Ummm. Nearly all rods are forged, even the stock ones. Pay extra for billets if you want them.

Stock 2V rods are powdered-metal with cracked caps design and they're ****!

Danner knows that, he was just pointing out that "forged" isn't a good term to use since stock rods and after market rods are made in the same process.

I have a set of those $250 rods (I got them with ARP2000 bolts for $200 about 18 months ago). A couple people said they are junk, but mine were exactly the same as Eagles. All the tolerances were great.

Yes I agree, I should not have said forged. Thanks for that info on the "cheap" rods. That was what I was wondering.

Getting really technical the forging has a grain whereas the powdered is like a casting with no grain. That grain is the reason the forging and the billets are stronger. It also is the reason the forging can be made stronger than a billet since a forging is simply a billet that has been pounded (cold or hot) rather than cut into shape. The forging simply keeps the grain pattern more intact.

The Chinese have been producing these raw rod and crank forgings for a while now. The better rods are finished machined in the USA with ARP bolts, the cheaper ones are usually machined in China or Taiwan. Either way be prepared to have them measured by a good shop as both the USA and the Chinese sets are known for all over the map specs and cursed by engine builders.

Agreed!!

NOTHING goes into any my engines unless I have measured every critical measurement (that I'm capable of measuring).

I have had way too many brand new items be all over the place.
