Bank 1 Too Rich?

The GF's 96 Cougar 4.6 with 105k miles has had the check engine light on for a month or two. Car is still running great on 89 octane - no pinging or bucking (finally got rid of that! She claims gas mileage has been fine, but I noticed she only went 170 miles on almost 3/4 tank.

Took it to Autozone and the guy said the code read "PO 172, Bank 1 too rich". Does that sound like an O2 sensor or

Thanks in advance!

could be the upper O2, since it is only coming out on one side.....at 105k, its about time to replace both upper O2s.....also clean the maf, then reset the computer by pulling out fuse #15 in the power distribution box, then crank it a couple quick times, then put the fuse back and start it up

Probably wouldn't hurt to clean the MAF sensor too.

Easiest way is with some MAF sensor spray cleaner, or electronic contact spray cleaner, available at Walmart and local parts stores.

Do a search on the subject for specifics, as it has been talked about alot.

The MAF wire has been cleaned, it is fine.

Is the left side of the motor considered to be "bank 1"?

Thanks,
Al

No, passenger side is bank 1, due to cylinder #1 residing there.
