first of all, expect to spend about 3-4k on internals and other engine work on a 4v, next a vortech would be nice, you will need t upgrade the fuel system and build a trans to support the power, and finally, take the damn image out of your sig. We arent allowed to have them.

you want 400hp N/A on that 4v?
You're looking at 03/04 cobra heads ported and polished, with the ford GT valvetrain kit ($1500 alone). Gonna need like Obu said, around $3,500 in just the shortblock- forged everything. You will need a bullllllllletproof tranny from Darrin and a sick Torque Converter.
Then on top you would want a 2001 cobra short runner intake/ported/polished. That's another $1,000 part. You're gonna need a shortrunner to take it up to enough RPM's to hit that 400.
hmm
expensive.

You're better off shooting a lil lower.
03/04 stock cobra heads & ford gt valvetrain kit
2001 cobra intake
4.30/4.56 gears....... with all of that you need a track-lok system, and a one piece driveshaft, and etc. etc.

Who cares if you have 400hp if you can't get the power to the ground?
Build up other parts of your car first.

While it's certainly possible to do NA, it's so much cheaper and easier to attain those power levels (and MUCH more) blown. These engines really love forced induction.

There are numerous 4v's putting out 400 RWHP in Cobras with no power adder. No crazy cams either, just the Ford Racing valvetrain kit. Only really trick piece in the equation is the big bore block. Everything from their setups will work in our cars except for the longtube headers, so I definately feel that a high 300 is possible in a MN-12. Although, as said before, there are cheaper ways to get more power.

Doesn't anyone else here read MM&FF? They made 411hp on a dyno, with a stock bottom ended 96 cobra engine. They had xe262ah cams, hooker headers, electric water pump, and a VRI intake. It made 374hp with stock intake. No ported heads no fancy blowers. Just a stock high milage engine with a set of reasonable cams and headers.

it's kinda hard to go off of their readings and whatnot. They have ideal conditions, cooled everything, everything controlled.
Go over to Corral.net and see what it takes those guys to make such numbers under realistic conditions. More than a stock sb and cams with headers. What kind of heads?
$400 for the sb,
I'm ASSUMING 03/04 cobra heads (I don't see how B heads would put out that power NA), which would cost $1500 with springs in them and cleaned up. The cams are around $1100 for DOHC, and the intake, and the tune, and $500+ headers. You're still looking at welllllll over $4,000. More like $5,000 with the random bolts plus all the dyno time they spent. And you still not seeing the full potential with the stock pistons/rods......you spent all that money and skimp out on the shortblock? So if anything blows, you gotta take it all apart, pay for the gaskets AGAIN, and head bolts, etc.

MM&FF does a pretty good job of doing comparisons of parts by doing back to back tests on differing parts by keeping all the variables the same for each test. Air temp water temp they also use a FAST system to keep the A/F spot on as well. However the very same thing that makes them good at comparing parts kind of skews the numbers at times with all of those controlled variables and a lot of times they are doing testing sans any accessories.

Take an engine making 400 at the flywheel on a dyno and strap it in a car with all the accessories and driveline sponging up power and you have significantly less at the rear wheels.

The goons at MM&FF are also the only ones who got the advertised gains from the P-51 manifold on a NA motor that I know of...

Some of their tests seem to match what actually happens, others don't seem to be repeatable in the real world. Take their tests with a grain of salt.
