A NewB to MN12 and I'm in Michigan!

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brian, I live in Canton and I got my 97 Bird 2 weeks ago. It's black, LX, V8, every option and only 23K miles. Only down side....I dont get my license til January !!
BUT, I guess this is good because I now have 2 and a half months to get this Beast looking reeaalllyy pretty. Would you guys be able to list some places where you get your True Dual exhaust, and how much it cost? I'm buying some Borla Turbos from a member on TCCOA. - I just love the sleek, yet unique sound from borla- I want to take out that Y-pipe and run straight pipes to the mufflers. Will this actually help the sound, LOUDNESS of the mufflers? Everyone I've talked to, said this will cost a lot, due to the fabricating and custom bending and everything. If I remove the 3rd cat, will I have the C.E.L. problems and all that nonsense? I don't think it's worth removing the 3rd cat, or all cats if I'm going to need to buy 02 sensors.

After I get this exhaust, I'm installing a new cd player, with components and 2 12" subs. Then a C.A.I.

-Brian

hey and welcome, by deleting your 3rd cat- no problems with a check engine light, and yes it will make the car a little louder. there is a few places that will due tru dual exhaust set ups, pm smokymance and get the number for the place that did his exhuast (his isnt true dual but they will do anything, cut out cats, and so on), just dont try to go to a chain shop such as midas or tuffy, they wont cut out any of the cats. one more alternative, is to cut off the 3rd cat and drive around with no exhaust on for a day or 2 till u find a place that will help you out.

enjoy ur bird, i got mine a month before i got my license, so i know how bad you want to get some stuff done and drive it.

other cheap mods

like i said in another forum, steve 4.6L lives out by lakeside mall area and he even helped me install my cai that he makes.

underdrive pulleys help out quite a bit by freeing up resistance on the serpentine belt.

and definitely install a trans cooler and j-mod the transmission.

one more question, do you have much knowledge as far as working on cars because that will help you out greatly!

Well, did you JUST put in flowmasters and keep all stock piping?
How does that sound/work for you?

And....no, I dont have much info on stuff like this. My dad has some common knowledge, I rely mostly on a guy I work with. He has a Camaro for summmer, and a beater, old Ranger relic. lol. He does just about EVERY job on his cars, and he enjoys it. If there is a job he can't do, it's cause he doesnt have the tools. He's willing to help me out on whatever, he's a BIG Ford man, has had 2 T-birds and at least 3 stangs.

What exactly is a J-mod anyway?
Everyone is telling me to get a '02 GT MAF.......what is this?

my exhaust- i had gotten the flowmaster cat back kit, i enjoyed the sound for 10 months, and just a day ago i pulled off the mufflers and it sounds mean. the kit consisted of new piping from just behind 3rd cat all the way back to the mufflers and then 2 delta flow 40's out back, kinda quiet imho. this winter i am going to work on removing the 3rd cat and mounting one muffler mid body so it sounds more like a mustang.

j-mod is a shift improver that makes the shifts firmer by modifying accumulators/accumulator springs and modifying the seperator plate, (smokymance and i got it done in 4 hours taking our time in my driveway here at home) its not hard, just takes a little patience, if you have the stock skinny tires, they will chirp when the car shifts, so with quicker shifts, improves transmission temp and life! if u want to know what it feels like, maybe sometime after u get ur license, ill take you for a ride since im not that far from you.

02 GT Mass air flow sensor-a bigger sensor, i believe it would require a tune for your car to run properly, but it would help on performance gains, but im leaving that out till i have more done, my stock MAF is working fine for my car.

if you are bored sometime check out the tech articles and read up on the j-mod and all that fun stuff. u can learn a lot just by reading.!

Mine's dual exhaust too.

Welcome to the boards! It sounds like you have a very nice MN12 there. A lot of the people in this area are more than willing to help out. I'd be more than willing to give you all the info on the stuff I've done to my car.

I'd be in for that. I'll have the experience by then, I'll be doing my J-Mod tomorrow or Wednesday depending on when the gaskets arrive from 5-Star.

Oh well, I got them for about a dollar each from Max @ 5-Star. So no big deal, really.
