Picked up my new engine yesterday...

And man, is it nice. Ok, well it's dirty and needs painting, but if the guy wasn't BSing me, it's way more powerful than I thought it was. I thought that it was a 400-hp engine, meaning 400 crank horsepower or around 330 rwhp, but when I went to pick it up, the guy told me more of the engine's history. It's from a 1970 Cougar Eliminator, so it's the 4-barrel Cleveland engine, and when the engine was in the Cougar, it was dynoed at 418rwhp. So...I can't wait to get this beastly thing into my Thunderbird! But of course I gotta make it all nice and pretty first. Once it's been painted and sufficiently decked out with chrome and billet aluminum, I'll post some pictures.

I'm planning on using a 5-speed from an SC. The 351C has the same bellhousing pattern as the 3.8/5.0/351W, so it'll bolt up with no problems. Finding a flywheel might be tricky, but there were some 90's F150s with 302's and M5R2's, so I think one of those will work. The hardest part I can see is getting some headers to fit on it, I might have to use extrude honed manifolds instead. But at least I don't have to worry about any electronics!

Damn........ That will be cool a 351 in a bird.
Like you said the good part is no electronics that will help a lot.
Keep us informed sounds like a lot of customizing will be done.
Good luck

Started tearing it down today... It's in pretty good shape. It needs some basic stuff and some accessories replaced, but the rotating assembly, lifters, pushrods, rockers, springs, and valves all look brand new. The cylinders still have the crosshatching, and the rings are in excellent condition, I have very good compression. Not bad for a 35 year old engine... Tomorrow I'm gonna go over it with a wire wheel to take off some surface rust and old paint, and re-paint it gloss black. I've got to order a new water pump, harmonic balancer, oil pump shaft, a stainless bolt set, a new oilpan, and I'll also order roller rockers, hardened pushrods, a new camshaft, and a gear drive to replace the timing chain ('cuz I like the way they sound!)

Here it is!

All cleaned up and purty. Just waiting on an oil pan, pulleys, a distributor and a coil, and some other assorted stuff. But it was just so pretty that I had to share.

I can only assume you will do something to beef up the 5 speed. I can't imagine it handling anything like that engine.
Don't forget to update your pilots license cause that baby is going to fly....

I'm having second thoughts on the 5-speed. The plan is to use an M5R2 from an SC. It's strong enough to handle the power level I'm expecting, but the thing is that parts for it have been discontinued by Ford, which will make it difficult and expensive to maintain. So, I'm beginning to think that a beefed-up 4R70W from a V6 Mustang, along with a Baumannator TCS, may be the way I go. The TCS will allow me to shift gears at will with the push of a button, and that's almost as much fun as a real manual.

No, so far I've only been able to go by what the guy I bought it from has told me. But his claims aren't too far off base from what I know, since my dad had a 1970 Cougar XR7, just like the one this engine came from, and he pulled around 430 rwhp with similar mods. Of course, I may end up with a lower peak hp, since I'll be changing the intake and cam to a more street-friendly combination, but one thing's for sure - it'll be a heck of a lot quicker than a '94 4.6!
