Former owner of 94 Bird with DOHC 4.6L swapped from a mark VIII

2011 CTS-V Wagon
1968 Torino was an original 289, C4, fully documented numbers matching car. Now: DOHC 4.6L/T-56 swapped, Cobra intake, IMRC delete, BBK long tubes and H pipe. Dynotech Aluminum Driveshaft, 9" rear with TrueTrac and 4.11's.

Do you have to do the driving school in order to compete at the other events? I don't have the slightest idea how the SCCA runs this stuff. I've only ever been to one SCCA event and it wasn't a regular event, it was very unstructured compared to the rules I've read online.

I believe you have to have there training. But there are many open track days if you look around, I'm going out for a full day on the 6th to Grattan.

J-Mod, MMC D/S, 24k gvw Tranny Cooler, Mark VIII TC,13” KVR Frt brakes, FRPP 3.73 rear, PI cams & Intake plus P&P NPI heads with the cooling mod, 1 3/8" Rr swaybar.

Hm. I probably won't be attending many this year, since the only wheels I have available still have snow tires mounted on them. Maybe in August or September, though. I'm thinking of getting a little Civic or CRX for a beater, if I do maybe I'll autocross it.

ya I was thinking about getting a Neon or a Fouce to race as well in Autocross.

the only thing with racin our thunderbirds in the autocross is we are in the class with the vettes, camaros, mustangs

No Vettes in my class, still Mustangs and stuff though, although none that are boosted like 03 Cobras, and motor swapped hondas, and modded WRX's and Evo VIII's, M3's, Supras...

But to run auto x, no you don't need to attend any type of school first, those are just offered to improve your driving skills and make you more competitive. Most places require a training school in order to open track but auto x isn't really anything like that. #1 thing in auto x is the driver, #2 is the tires, #3 is everything else.

I would love to attend the school, but unfortunately it's too early for me to make this year. Autocross is a lot of fun, though. If I do get a little Honda, it'll be getting a b16a swap so that I don't get bored driving it everywhere.

I personally really enjoy auto crossing huge awkward stuff. There is nothing more fun than a course designed by a Miata guy when I've got the Lightning at an event.

Yeah, the last one I went to, there were lots of BMW 3-series, Hondas, and VWs. The only big cars there were mine and this kick-*** widebody Stingray Vette. It was like driving an oil tanker down a river. The course was only about 2-3 feet wider than the T-bird. But I still had a blast, and managed not to take out any cones. I got the 1st place trophy, too, but that's just cuz I was the only one in my class.

What class were you running in? F Stock? Street Mod? Any class I would see a T-bird fitting into always has a few cars around here and I would think in a bigger city you'd have more people at events.

Well it wasn't a typical SCCA event, it was a Detroit Section SAE autocross, so only SAE members were allowed. SCCA did put it on, but the normal classes didn't exist. There weren't enough cars there. The classes were GTU, GTP, and GTO. GTU for cars under 3.0L, GTO for cars over 3.0L, and GTP for heavily modified cars. It was super-informal, and lots of fun.
