96-98 3.8 Mustang heads question

Over at V6 power.net, somebody replied to my post saying that I would have an easier time finding heads if I searched for 96-98 Mustang heads also. Is this true? Will the 96-98 Mustang 3.8 heads match up to 96-97 3.8 Tbird/Cougar intakes?

yea, they are exactly the same. BUT keep in mind.........when junk yards see "MUSTANG" they think gold. You will have a cheaper price looking for a set of T-bird/Cougar heads than you will with a set of Mustang heads.

junkyards keep a database of applications. The price between mustang and tbird should be the same for the same heads. Look at car-part.com and you'll see what I mean.

It really depends on the specific yard. There are quite a few yards around here that don't seem to believe in computers.

see it's different in the yards around my place. Like I said, they thrive on the word "mustang" and think about $$$, when it's the same as a t-bird stuff. Heck, i paid $425 for my new tranny from a 97 cougar with 40K on it. They wanted $575 for the same thing from a 98 stang with 60K on it. But it's the same thing!

They are actually not exactly the same. They have smaller 7 mm valves. They flow a bit more air and the retainers are lighter so they can rev a bit higher without floating.

I believe they added 10 hp to the 3.8 in the Stang. I bought a set on Ebay rebuilt last year for $90.

Everybody else has said they are the same? If they are not the same, will they still bolt up to the 96/97 3.8 Tbird/Cougar intake?

Yes even though the valvetrain might be slightly different the casting and everything will match with all the T-Bird stuff.

Alright, somebody else here pm'd saying it won't work. Some say it will, some say it won't. Does anybody know of any links that will tell what parts will and won't bolt up? I need to find this out ASAP because I don't want to buy those heads, have them ported, get the car torn apart, just to discover that they won't fit. If they wouldnt match for some reason, I'd be out all that money.

I found this website useful :http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/ar90134.htm
It tells you which heads are interchangeable, if you don't know the cast # this won't help though. :P

Ok I've looked in 3 different parts catalogs (RockAuto, Parts America, and NAPA where I work) and all 3 list the same head for both cars, so from this I can deduce that the heads are the same and consequently your intake will work on any 96-98 cylinder head. Before you buy them all you need to do is verify that it has 6 6mm intake bolts on each head. With that info you know it will work.

Okay, thanks everybody. I will probably go ahead and buy them. I sent the dude a pm to make sure the heads have 6 6mm bolts on each one. As soon as he replies, I'll probably make him an offer.

Scottiboi, that article you posted should be in our tech article section or somewhere. Maybe a sticky in the 3.8 Thread???

About how much horsepower is gained from ported heads, ported intakes but using the stock cam?

it depends on what stage you're going to port them at.

But if you do ported upper, lower, and heads you're looking anywhere between 12-45 rwhp. (intakes give about 10-12 rwhp from my understanding, but if you go with a full blown port, you're looking at the high number!)

Also I believe the stock cam on the 96 engine is actually more agressive than the 99-00 mustang cam. Maybe someone can chalk up the info on that one.

(adding more info)

If you do go with the ported intakes, heads and such, one thing to definately look into is a J-mod for the tranny. Trust me. It's that much more worth it! It'll cost you about $100.00 tops (price for all the parts, drill bits, and tranny fluid). My bird feels like a completely new machine after I added the J-mod. I also did the exhaust at the same time too

I may eventually do the J-Mod. It does have the Transgo Shift Kit on it now along with a 2800 stall TC and some other minor mods, so I guess that plus the ported intakes and heads should make her somewhat quicker. Hopefully, the milege isn't an issue. She has 93K now, but I may not get all this done for a while yet. Right now, I'm just getting the parts ahead of time.
