3.8 Question

Okay, my 94 3.8 is on the way out (or has been for several months). I just can't justify putting a couple of thousand dollars into this car, but I do like the car and it's styling.

I have been sniffing around for a new Cougar, and I have found a couple of 97's. The only problem is that they have 3.8s as well. My question is what year did the (for the most part) fix the problem with the head gaskets?

I would really like a V8 car, but I don't see any listed in my area currently.

Any advice or comments are appreciated.

96+ addressed the head gasket problem. It can still blow but is far less likely to happen.

yea, the problem still exists on the 96+ engines, but has been maintained much better. I have blown the HG on my 96 once, and havent had to do them again since Feb. of last year.

I will admit it though, it is the best learning experience I've ever had with this car, because now I've done it (especially with barely any mechanical experience at all) and I can go out and do it again in an entire weekend instead of 3 months. Hands down best learning experience ever (That and installing a new j-modded tranny a few months ago)

96 3.8 NA, 180* T-Stat, PnP Upper and Lower intake, Air Silencer Removed 9" K&N added to fender well, Mild J-modded transmission, 24K B&M Supercooler, 2.25" dual Magnaflow high-flow cats w/2.25" di/do Magnaflow, JVC El-Kameleon LX-30.

RIP Orion 800.4 amp, and Ascendant Audio 12" sub. Caught on fire in trunk...

I was planning on fixing up my 94, as I like the car very much, but since I don't have the ability to do the job myself (I am still recovering from some really fun back surgery in Feb.). I am going to have to either pay someone to fix it up, or get a new car. I am hoping to get back to work so I can get some positive cash flow again.

Currently the 94 has a bad HG, cracked radiator, and some electrical problems, but like I said, doing any sort of repair is difficult, much like walking around.

Sorry to whine so much, but it is just depressing to have the car going to hell like it is.

I know how it feels man, my 93 has so many different things wrong with it, I'm just left driving it till it dies. I would love to get all the work done myself, but I don't have the time or the resources. When the costs to repair outweigh the value of the car I get a little bit hesitant to do the work. Everything on the car is leaking, braking, refusing to work, and I just don't enjoy the car enough to put that kind of money into it.

the only reason that my car is actually running is because it tends to break ONLY when tax return season comes, so I actually have the $$$ to fix it. 1st year it was the HG, then the 2nd it was the tranny. I pray nothing happens the 3rd year (I'd like to actually use it to put down on something like a house) but it's just my luck ;D

from the mech. quotes I got it would be just as cheap to put another engine in as it would be to do headgaskets....But I'm begining to think these cars arnt worth fixing....I've had five people dump they're cougar or thunderbird off on me for under $300....and all they needed was prolly $100 worth of repair...

i just swapped in a 97 engine when my 94's hg's went and have had no problems with it.

1994 Thunderbird - 2000 4.2L M5R2 now has 55k

An engine swap would not be a bad idea, but finding someone to do it in my area for a reasonable amount is hard to do. I am still just driving it, hoping it holds together long enough for me to find another ride. It really sucks, since I really like the car and it's styling.

are you unable to do it yourself? it's not hard if you've ever pulled an engine. just make sure you mark EVERYTHING before you take it off. should be done in a w/e if everything is on-hand.

Have you put out a shout to the Florida chapter members? Maybe if you can pay for parts, beer, and food, you might get some guys that would make a meet out of it and get you back on the road.

PCD, I have asked, and got nothing. No big deal though. I really hate having to drive the car with no A/C, especially here in Fl. The car runs okay as long as I don't run the AC. I had to unplug the compressor, and I use the AC switch to power up the fan to keep things going.

I will give the car points that it has kept running, and has bailed out the other cars in the family. Our Intrepid decided to squish it's torque converter yesterday (warranty thank god) so the Cougar comes to the rescue once again.

Anyway, I'm rambling...
