Average temperature of a 3.8l

After redoing my intake, the car is running fantastic! I think it may even be faster than my Mark VII!

Anyway, I started the project because the car was leaking coolant into the heads and the temp under load would start climbing until it was TOO close to hot.

Now it will stay around a quarter on the meter and when it starts getting hot, it gets up to half and a little past that.

Today I was driving in 100+ temperatures outside with the A/C FULL blast and going up hills, speeds of 40-60 and the gauge hung around the A and L or NORMAL and towards the end of the trip (about 25 minutes / 20 miles) it was passing the L but leveled off there. Far better than it ever did before.

When I got home, I let the car idle for a while to bring the temp down. It rounded off at the half way mark.

I ask, "what is the average temp for a 3.8l" because my other two V8's never fluctuate from there normal position under ANY condition. They rise to the normal position and stay there.

Why do the V6's seem to have such an issue with the temp staying steady?

Also, is there anywhere I can get a temp gauge I could hook in the car to see what the actual temperature is? The ones I have found are pretty pricey to just fill my curiosity.

The stock gauge tells us nothing. If you're just looking to stick a gauge on it temporarily to check operating temp, a cheap one from your local auto parts store will do the job.

Argh....

I was looking at prices on gauges and found them from $25 to $xxx (AS MUCH AS YOU WANT TO PAY).

The car has been doing very well. Under cool temps outside and low load, the gauge stays at 1/4. As he load increases with the heat outside, the gauge goes up to half when the fan kicks in. It goes a little higher than 1/2 under full load (100+ outside, A/C running full blast) but that is it.

I still want to get a gauge though. I am waiting to get some more stuff to buy from Amazon or RockAuto before I order it.

Do I hook the new guage to the old temp sensor? I noticed a lot of the gauges come with their own wiring and sensor.

What would be best to get? Just a gauge and wire it to the old sensor? Just run a wire from the sensor to the new gauge in the interior and a wire to ground from the gauge?

No, you'll need to use the sender supplied with whatever gauge you purchase.

Hey White Lincoln, my 96 Cougar started running hotter than normal, turned out the radiator needed the dirt washed out from the motor side out and it runs a lot cooler now.

Yeah, after I replaced the radiator, it ran a lot cooler too.

It seems to be okay now, but I just think it's weird that this lil' V6 temp fluctuates where my V8's don't, no matter the load or temperatuer outside.

Interesting.

I have yet to get a t-stat gauge to see what is really going on.
