3.8 to 4.6

So anyway. My 3.8 finnaly blew its head gaskets.

I've been planning to swap it for the 4.6 for some time now but now I really need to.

I know I need the engine, all accesorys, PCM and main harness. Then I need the fuel lines and rails.

With the fuel I'm assuming its a different pump all together?

Also I did some brief looking up and found that the transmission codes were the same. Is this true? Everything I find on transmissions are contradictory. Will that tranny bolt up to my existing transmission?

Personally I do not know for sure what trans it is under there right now.

And no I'm not selling it right now, it won't even run.

Any advice is much appreciated! Please don't take me as a newbie either, though I do not know too much on the Tbird, I do have a lot of mechanical skills. I've swapped a 95 SHO motor into a newer Taurus, I'm sure I can handle this swap. I'd just like to know what all I need.

You can't bolt a 3.8 Transmission to a 4.6. Make sure you use a 96/7 model as a doner for the engine, trans, PCM, engine wiring harness(this is the only harness that's different between V8 and V6 in these years) and fuel lines/rails, it's a pretty easy conversion on 96/7s compared to prior years

Thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully I can find a good condition donor to snatch this out of.

Seems pretty straight forward , just time consuming. I really wanted to do this swap later down the road when I had time to rebuild a 4.6 , but its now or never I guess!

Why not find a low mileage 3.8 for now to hold you over and give yourself the time to build the 4.6 you want.

It's not a 97 Sport, it just looks like one!
