my Vortech progress so far

Here is what my engine compartment look like as of last week, I can't wait to get the new tranny in and 3200rpm stall converter. It pulls pretty dang good with 8psi boost

I just got my college fed aid so we'll see what's worth getting on eBay soon That piping looks really nice for benig custom. You going to make me one? And it looks like you've got the aftercooler set up too? If you do what kind is it and are there pics of it?

And lastly. Sucks to have a new supercharger with snow on the ground haha. You atta come down here some weekend and try it out at tristate raceway before it snows here too.

OH I just noticed you cut out part of the passenger wheel well/shock tower to fit the intake tube. Do you think there's any structurability issues along with that? Did you have to reinfroce it somehow? Oh and one last thing I promise. When will there be a tech article?

Okay I lied just noticed something else haha. Looks like that one tube interferes with the top radiator hose? Just curious if I see that correctly. Guess a custom hose is in order too.

ya, the hose is resting on the intercooler tube and I need to modify it yet, all I need is a 1.5" 90* exhaust bend to modify the coolant hose. I did cut the strut tower but I welded in 1/8" piece of pipe for structure to make it solid again. Without the aftercooler setup I wouldn't need to cut any sheet metal. Almost the whole floor is cut out were the air box was also because the aftercooler is in the front bumper cover and sticks out up into the engine compartment.

NICE! I hate you!! BTW, is that intake pipe for the SC kinked or is it hard plastic? The radiator hose is easily resolved with some piping and clamps. Where did you put the water reservoir for the aftercooler? Any tuning done?

I just painted my intake tubes too. I just don't have a camera and I won't have one 'till I drive back down to Ventura. I can't wait to see what sort of numbers your setup will yield. What kind of fuel pump did you opt for?

Very cool. the first forced-induction V6 LX T-Bird on the TCCoA.

I was just looking at my engine bay and I noticed a few things.

In order for me to run as much piping as you have I would either have to hope that my mach1 has enough raised cowl up front to put the aftercooler pipe to the passenger side a bit more and possibly have to raise it up higher too. Or I guess I could convert to DIS too. Reason is, my distributor is right in the middle of where your pipe runs to the aftercooler. So I don't know how I'll make that work.

Here's just a big shot in the dark...but do you think it would be practical to relocate the battery and mount the supercharger and air cleaner on the other side of the engine? When I was looking at it it seemed like there was a bit more room there. Probably too much trouble to even get into though so you can probably toss that idea.

If you had a stock hood, do you think all that stuff would fit under it?

How hard is it to convert to DIS?

I have a stock hood yet, I only had to dimple one of the underhood braces a bit to clear. My water tank is in the trunk but it isn't hooked up yet, I'll probibly work on that project tommarrow. You really don't need an after cooler with only 8psi, I plan on 12-13psi once my 4.2L is built, and I'm going to push 10-11psi on the stock block

Well I pretty much have the same plans as you then. I had planned on getting the vortech first and then a ford 4.2 crank and all other things and swapping that in later. I've read that the ford 4.2 crank is stronger than all the aftermarket stroker kit cranks.

thats still the factory MAF yet, I have a 75mm pro-m but I need to install the chip and 42# injectors first. Blow thru allows better throttle response and helps with idle surge due to the MAF being ALOT closer to the throttle body than a suck thru would be (about 10+ft of pipe between the MAF and TB otherwise) I also can run a Blow-off valve so I DON'T have to reciculate heated air and I get the sweet BOV sound when I let off the throttle

Very nice setup!! (But you’re missing two plugs. )

Question to follow up on PJ-4.2L’s question: How does the MAF adjust for the pressurized air?

If I understand the principles of a MAF (and I’m no expert), it compares the airflow past the heated element (or the amount of current required to maintain the temp) with the unheated element and calculates the air mass. Will the pressurized air give the same mass, or will it register a different mass since it’s pressurized and will have a different cooling effect on the heated wire?

Just wondering as almost all the supercharged applications have the MAF before the supercharger. And I’ve wondered this very aspect myself so I’d like some thoughts on the blow through setup.

good question on the blow thru. I've seen a post on the + and - of it writen by the man. He use to not like the blowthru setup because it was hard to tune (you NEED a 9" straight run of pipe before and after the MAF to get a good reading) UNTIL the Pro-M Univer came out. The Univer samples 360* around the MAF and you could even install it on the middle of a 90* bend if you wanted it too, making it ALOT easier to tune.

So would you recommend blow through or sck through with an 80mm LMAF? I plan on having it tuned at a fordchip session or by apten.

Thanks for the reply and the info.

I didn't know about the new style MAF from Pro-M, so that's good to know (for furture plans, hehehehe). I knew the OEM style MAF's were very picky on the location in the intake path and it's nice that someone has come out with one that samples around the outside.

I went to Pro-M and read up on the Univer and it seems pretty nice. Let us know how your tuning goes with it!
